Faviana’s Guide to Updos

You have found the perfect dress, matching jewelry, and a stunning pair of shoes, but your look is not complete until you have the perfect ‘do (hair-do)! Ladies, prom is not the time to just “wing it” when it (especially) comes to your hair.  So, how do you choose the perfect updo? Well, the neckline of your dress can answer that question! Below is our go-to guide explaining which updo’s best complement different types of dresses based on the art of necklines.

Halter

Halter dresses are intended to display the shoulders and the arms to the best effect. To avoid taking away from this, an updo is a must. A relaxed French pleat with some height on top is a perfect option for halter dresses. If you plan on getting your hair done at the salon, then simply show your hairdresser the picture above and let them work their magic! However, if you are daring enough to tackle this task on your own, here’s how:

  1. Part your hair to the side and tease the crown of the head. This works best if your hair has been freshly blow dried.
  2. Brush your hair back into a low ponytail, making sure you keep some volume on top.
  3. Roll your hair into a chignon shape, tuck the ends in, and secure them tightly.
  4. For a more relaxed look, pull out some hair in the front and loosely curl it. Don’t forget to use hairspray (total must).

Sweetheart

The sweetheart neckline is a classic and one of the most popular necklines. So, why not pair it with one of the most popular hairstyles, such as a classic chignon updo? A simple chignon updo really brings out the sweet in sweetheart. This hairstyle can be easily created with a hairband, a few bobby pins, a teasing comb, and a little bit of practice. V-Neck

V- Neck dresses can be very versatile and your perfect hairstyle depending on the type of look that you want to achieve. If you’re going for a fun, flirty look, then a low messy side bun is the perfect match for you. Celebrity hairstylist, Sheenon Olson, gives five easy steps to create the perfect messy side bun.

  1. Curl your hair (if it isn’t already) and gather it on one side of your head and pull it into a ponytail.
  2. Taking small sections, back-comb your hair to create volume.
  3. Bunch up each section that has been back-combed and bobby pin them into place.
  4. Continue bunching and pinning pieces until a balanced bun is created.
  5. Twist your bangs back and bobby pin them into the bun.

However, if a more sophisticated look is what you desire, go with a sleek high ponytail! To do this, start by using a straightener to get your hair as straight as possible. Don’t forget to use a heat protection spray! Next, brush and smooth your hair into a high ponytail. Be sure to smooth every inch of your hair before putting it in a tight elastic. Use hairspray to smooth away any fly-aways and then take a small section of hair from underneath your ponytail, wrap it around the elastic and secure it in place with a bobby pin. If you have short hair, you may want to consider extensions to accomplish this hairstyle.

High Neck

High Neck dresses have an instantly regal feel to them, thus making a topknot is a perfect complement. Topknots make your neck look seemingly longer, making it easier to pull off more dramatic high necklines that would otherwise compete with your hair. I love topknots because there is no one-size-fits-all to them. Messy or sleek, braided or simple—it’s up to you!

Jewel/Scoop

Because jewel or scoop neck dresses tend to not draw as much attention to the chest and shoulder areas, it is important that your hair takes on the spotlight. This neckline is fun because it allows for you to get creative with your hairstyle, yet still complement your dress. My favorite updo’s for jewel and scoop neck dresses is the French twist and fishtail braided updo. I must warn you, these hairstyles are not easy so if hair is not your forte, you may want to get some help from a friend or a professional hairstylist.
