Book Review: It’s Not You, It’s Her

It’s now been a week since I finished the book and I’m going to try and write a review, never a good idea but life got a little hectic.

It’s Not You, It’s Her is a little bit different, it’s not your usual romance and that’s what I love about it. The easiest way to describe it is that it’s one of those ‘how did you meet’ stories that is going to blow the grandkids away if it ever gets that far.

Chelsea Porter is The Breakup Girl, she has made a career out of being the one to break the bad news of a relationship ending. She has nothing to do with the relationship breaking down but hires out her services to be the one to break the news. I love this because it is so different, you don’t often hear about someone making a career of this and it makes Chelsea’s backstory quite interesting.

Callum McKinnel is now head of McKinnel’s Distillery and engaged to a girl he has known forever, the families are close friends and their parents have had them married off for decades. Unfortunately she has decided this marriage isn’t what she wants and hires Chelsea to let Callum know.

I love the characters in this book, and it’s the first in the McKinnels of Jewell Rock series so it will be fantastic to see how the characters grow and to learn more about the secondary characters in upcoming books.

Callum is dedicated to the Distillery and he had always had some wonderful ideas for keeping them relevant and growing the business, his dad was always against changing anything but with all the boutique distilleries popping up Callum recognises the need to do something to keep them in the limelight. The family business is his life, and it involves all of his tight knit family.

Chelsea is a fascinating character, partly for her career choice and how you get into a line of work like that, but also for her back story. I would like to know a little more about that.

The writing is sweet and funny with an element of suspense.

The chemistry is palpable but the back and forth is brilliant. Callum is chivalrous and protective, he has sisters so is always looking out for someone, and Chelsea is independent and strong-willed, determined not to need anyone or rely on anyone. It makes for some very interesting interactions.

Yet again Rachael has written outside her box, and done a massive amount of research into the serious business of distilling whiskey, to create a sweet and captivating story. This is quite a short book, being a Special Edition, but it makes up for the small word count with the big emotions.

The added bonus of buying the Australian version is that it also included The Kissing Season, a previously released digital novella. This story is also available in a US edition called A Dog and A Diamond.

Rachael Johns can be found on Twitter, Facebook and her Website.

It’s Not You, It’s Her is available now from Angus & Robertson Bookworld, Booktopia and where all good books are sold.
