Be A Tourist in Your Own City

A few weeks ago, my parents came to visit. They usually come in the wintertime because they are avid skiers and love Colorado winters.

Since it was spring this visit and they are planners, they had to think of something fun for us all to do that did not involve skiing – which is how my dad came up with the idea of a Segway Tour.

Now I know what you’re thinking – segway tour?! Aren’t segways for mall cops or something like that? Well yes, they did make a silly movie about a mall policeman on a segway but that’s beside the point. Trust me, riding a segway is actually a really enjoyable experience that you should try for yourself!

The guide took us all over Denver for two hours, which came out to 7 miles through and around parks, trails, historic sites, as well as right along the sidewalks of downtown Denver. We saw the Capital building, Denver Art Gallery, Denver Convention Center as well as the Denver Mint.

It was truly exhilarating as we passed by beautiful scenery along the Platte River and in Confluence Park. Our guide (who turns out was actually Australian – oh the irony!) narrated the tour with history of the city at every stop we made. We all had a blast and I even saw a sculpture that I had never seen before in my 15 years of living in Colorado.

There are many other ways you can be a tourist in your own city as well. Some cities offer scavenger hunts or bike tours. Try a bus tour or in certain cities like Boston, Seattle and San Fransisco, you can climb aboard a duck tour, which is an amphibious tour bus that goes both on land and in the water.

Check the local paper and the internet to find out a type of local excursion around your city that works for you. Then get out there and explore your city – not only will it be a fun new experience, but you will take home a little piece of your city and hold it in your heart.
