How did you decide to focus on embroidery, as opposed to more conventional ways of marking art, like painting?
I like that embroidery – it is a very intentional craft, in the sense that you cannot accidentally create a stitch. Here is another example I like to give. To draw a line with a pen it takes about 2 seconds, but to “draw” the same line with embroidery takes about 3 minutes. I like that very much about embroidery, it is like my form of meditation and therapy.
그림처럼 예술을 표현하는 방법과는 달리 어떻게 자수 아티스트의 길을 가기로 결정하셨나요?
자수는 한 땀 한 땀 손으로 떠야 하기 때문에 매우 의도적인 수공예 예술이라는 점이 제일 맘에 들어요. 펜으로 선을 그리려면 약 2초가 걸리지만, 같은 선을 자수로 그리는 데는 약 3분이 걸려요. 그래서 자수를 놓는 것은 명상과 치유 방식이라고 생각해요.
為什麼您選擇刺繡，而非如繪畫等其他更傳統的藝術表現類型？
刺繡需要縝密的計畫構思，為避免錯誤，每一針下手前都需要在腦中構圖。舉例來說，使用一枝筆畫出直線，只需要兩秒，但透過刺繡勾勒出直線卻可能耗時三分鐘！刺繡於我更像是另一種形式的冥想與自我療癒。

Other than embroidery, you also play the violin and love to travel. What is the common thread that runs through these different passions of yours?
The discovery and imagination of stories. When playing a piece, I get very emotional about the piece that I am playing and I like to imagine the story that inspired the song. It could be a simple Minuet or Gavotte and I will imagine characters that go with this dance. It could be a very dark and sinister sounding concerto and I will imagine stormy seas and people on the ship.
With travelling, it is kind of the same. With a change in landscape and environment, I get to observe people from different cultures. Even the houses that they live in are enough to get me thinking about their lives and imagining characters and stories. I usually note these on my iPhone – or when I have time, I will sit in a cafe and write in a notebook.
자수 외에 바이올린을 연주하고 여행을 좋아하시는데 이런 다양한 열정을 연결하는 공통점은 무엇인가요?
스토리의 발견과 상상력이라고 생각해요. 제가 연주하는 곡에 대해 매우 감정적이게 되고 그 곡에 영감을 준 스토리를 더해 상상하는 것을 좋아해요. 심플한 미뉴에트나 가보트 같은 곡이라면 이 춤과 어울리는 캐릭터들을 상상할 거예요. 그리고 매우 어둡고 사악한 협주곡이라면 폭풍우가 치는 바다와 그 배 위에 있는 사람들을 상상할 것 같아요.
여행하는 것도 약간 비슷한 맥락이에요. 풍경과 환경의 변화와 함께 다른 문화권의 사람들을 관찰할 수 있어요. 그들이 살고 있는 집 또는 그들의 삶에 대해 생각하면 캐릭터와 스토리를 상상하기에 충분해요. 저는 보통 아이폰에 메모를 하지만 시간이 있다면 카페에 앉아서 노트에 쓸 거예요.
除刺繡外，您也喜愛旅遊與演奏小提琴，對您而言，這三者之間有什麼共通點呢？
探索與想像的過程。演奏樂器時，我會投入許多情感並根據曲調所給予的靈感，想像其中可能發生的情節，舉例來說，一首輕快的小步舞曲（Minuet）或加沃特（Gavotte），讓我聯想到舞動中的人們；一首驚心動魄的協奏曲，則會產生人們受困於暴風雨中的船上的畫面。
旅行也是相同的道理，身處在不同的環境裡，我喜歡觀察來自不同文化的過客，甚至是當地住所也能讓我想像他們的生活方式、個人特質等等，通常我會記錄在手機中，或是空閒時於咖啡館寫下這一切。

From your Instagram feed, it is clear that you have a very distinctive and vibrant personal style. Do your style and art influence each other – and if so, in what ways?
Yes, I love prints and colours. When working on my art, I put different colours and textures together on fabric. However, when it comes to dressing, I become the canvas so I tend to put together colours and mix prints that I would use for my work.
인스타그램 피드를 보면 매우 독특한 퍼스널 스타일을 가지고 있는데 당신의 스타일은 예술에 영향을 주나요?
네, 저는 프린트와 컬러를 좋아해요. 미술 작업을 할 때 패브릭에 다른 컬러와 텍스처를 함께 더해요. 하지만, 제 스타일을 완성할 때 제 자신이 캔버스가 되기 때문에 제 작품에 사용할 컬러를 조합하고 프린트를 함께 코디하는 경향이 있어요.
從您的Instagram帳戶可以發現您強烈鮮明的個人特質，那麼您的風格與藝術作品是否相互影響，如果有，又是如何影響的呢？
是的！我喜歡印花、繽紛的色彩。創作時，我會將不同色調與材質使用在布料上；若是穿搭，我會把自己當成一塊畫布，如同創作時，混搭各式印花與色彩。

While working on the CHARLES & KEITH capsule collection, what inspired you to create the artworks that will be featured on the products?
I was very heavily inspired by the characters that I collect from my stories – either from my imagination or the books I read. One of my main characters that I always end up drawing is named Anya. When I was younger, I wrote a whole journal worth of letters to her over the course of a year, detailing my thoughts and observations of my world.
In a way, she has become quite real to me. For this collection, I thought it would be a great chance for her to come into my world through the form of the illustrations I create. This collection is also influenced by my love for hands, because hands are starting points for almost everything creative – it is like a gateway to other worlds.
CHARLES & KEITH 캡슐 컬렉션 작업을 하는 동안 무엇을 통해 영감을 받았나요?
저는 상상력이나 제가 읽은 책 그리고 제 이야기에서 수집한 인물들에게 매우 큰 영감을 받았어요. 제가 항상 그리는 주요 캐릭터 중 하나는 Anya에요. 제가 어렸을 때, 1년 내내 그녀에게 저의 세계관과 제가 관찰한 점을 상세히 설명하면서 편지를 썼어요.

本次與CHARLES & KEITH聯名合作，您的創作靈感來源為何？
主要靈感來自曾經閱讀過的書籍，或是自己想像的故事中的角色。繪圖過程中，Anya經常是用來結尾的角色，年輕時，我曾花費一年的時間寫了一整本信件式日誌，對Anya詳細描述了我對世界的看法和觀察。
這個角色在某種程度上對我非常真實。而我認為這次合作是一個很好的機會，讓這個角色得以透過插畫進入我的世界，此外還有一項我最喜愛的元素，那就是「手」，無論妳想創造什麼，幾乎都需要由雙手開始，它們就像妳前往其它世界的必經通道。

What message(s) do you hope to convey with your art?
That it is ok to be weird, and it is ok to be sad. It is ok to not fit in. It is all ok, as long as it is true to you.
