The Truth About Wireless Push-Up Bras

This season has been a hot one for wireless push-up bras, but they’re not a new addition to the market. We’re sure you’re interested in this bra anomaly. You’ve probably even said, “how does that even work”? Don’t worry – our bra fit expert is here to give you the low down on wireless push-up bras.

Get ready to learn if they work, who they’re best suited for and the overall design flaw that prevents wireless push-up bras from being an everyday option here at HerRoom.

At HerRoom, we stock around thirty wireless push-up bras from a variety of brands like Maidenform and Glamorise. Upon first inspection of the bras you’ll notice that in place of a sturdy and supportive underwire, there is a thick, wide band of fabric to act as your support (shown below). Women larger than a DDD(D3) would essentially feel the soft band and chuckle a little. As women, we grow up understanding the unchallenged fact that we absolutely need underwire to make it through the work day.

How does this wireless push-up bra work and how does it feel to wear?

It depends on the design, but in most cases the support level will be derived from the band. You’ll find longline wireless push-up bras like Leonisa’s Deep Plunge Longline Push-Up (shown below) with exaggerated bands, which in turn will provide the most support if you’re going wireless. The bigger the band on wireless push-up bras, the more comfortable and secure you’ll feel.

Just as a disclaimer we want you to understand that no amount of fabric can replace a tried and true underwire when it comes to the proper support of your breast tissue.

On the other hand, you’ll also encounter thin bands like on Cosabella’s Dolce Tri Padded Wireless Push-Up Bra (shown below). These wireless push-up bras with thin bands are essentially bralettes. We do not recommend trying to wear these out to dinner or to work. /if you are larger than a D cup, thin anything on an everyday bra is bad news. Due to the thin malleable band and lack of center panel, as you move around in your wireless push-up bralette, so will your breasts.

Now that you have an understanding that thick features are good qualities and thin features are bad when it comes to design features on a bra for women larger than a D cup, what about sizing?

Is a wireless push-up bra appropriate for your size and breast attribution?

Wireless push-up bras start at an A cup and end at a DD cup. There are some of these bras that come in S-M-L type sizing, but that equates to an A, B and C cup. Therefore, if you are larger than a DD cup, a wireless push-up bra is not your friend, but you still have many beautiful bralettes to choose from for lazy weekends on the couch.

Push-up bras in general are great for women who have shallow, but still naturally supported breast tissue. If you have pendulous or deflated breasts, any type of padded bra with a plunge should be avoided. The good news is: there are some wireless push-up bras like Bali’s Comfort Revolution Lift Foam Wireless Bra that have full coverage closed cups that will help give that boosted bust line illusion under clothing.

Why wireless push-up bras don’t cut it at HerRoom.

We’ve tried on several wireless push-up bras and one thing really bothers us when it comes to the fit. The gore, or center panel will never lay flat to the chest plate. This leaves the breasts floating in the air, unsupported separately and depending on the amount of push-up, relying on each other to stay in place. It feels like wearing a low impact sports bra with bulk. A woman with a smaller cup size will essentially not be bothered by this, but when it comes to everyday wear, the last thing a woman wants to be concerned about daily – is an ill-fitting bra. Lastly, due to the lack of an underwire within a wireless push-up bra, it will inherently break down much quicker than your conventional underwire bra.

Why purchase a wireless push-up bra at all then?

If you are the appropriate size for a wireless push-up bra with a more youthful bust line, have a low-impact lifestyle or suffer from monthly breast tenderness this type of bra is a fabulous option for you . Some women can agree that an underwire bra simply cannot be on the agenda some days, we understand. Additionally, a wireless push-up would be an excellent travel buddy for long flights or car rides.

One thing we cannot deny: much like a bralette, wireless push-up bras are very comfortable.
