DIY Face Mask Chain in Under 5 Steps (& under $5)

Car keys, iPhone, sunnies, hand sanitizer…. oh, and my Face Mask. Essentials when leaving the house. Wearing a face mask is a major part of our “new normal.” But the boomerang process of wearing the mask in a store, taking it off in your car, putting it back on, and so on can lead to a few new challenges. True story: one time as I was leaving a grocery store I took off my mask (still hooked on my ear), but the wind got a hold of it and blew it off. So, chasing after it I go! Fun stuff. ahem. Or, taking it off in the car, placing it on the passenger seat, exiting the car at another location, and forgetting my mask.

What’s the solution? A face mask chain! Just like those you (might) use for your sunnies, this is the easiest (and most chic) way to always have your mask on hand whether you are wearing it or not.

What’s the problem? Many face mask chains sold online can cost anywhere between $25 to $50! With my limited budget in mind, I knew that I could make one for MUCH less than that. And I did! The one I am wearing cost me approximately $5 to make. Additionally, I did it in approximately 5 steps.

Here’s how to make your very own face mask chains in under 5 steps… and within budget!

DIY a Face Mask Chain

Supplies: Stop by a craft supply store (like Michaels, JoAnn Fabric, etc…) and pick up small and large lobster clasps, apparel trim (design of your choice), and needle-nose players (if you don’t have these already)

Step 1: Cut off a piece of the apparel trim (approximately 25 – 30 inches in length)

Step 2: Using your needle-nose plyers, carefully open up the gold jump ring. Attach it to the end of your trim. Again using the needle-nose plyers, carefully now close the jump ring.

Step 3: Open up the small lobster claw so you can attach the large lobster claw to that finding.

Step 4: Repeat steps 2 & 3 for the other side of the apparel trim.

Step 5: Attach the large lobster claw finding to any face mask! Easy to remove from the mask to use on a new, clean mask just by opening the jewelry finding claw.

Good luck with creating your own face mask chains!
