Fall 2017 Fashion Trends: Fave Fall Jackets

Is your closet ready for fall? Let’s check:

  1. Do you keep classics that you can wear season after season? (done and almost done)
  2. Are you in the market for new outerwear? (time to shop…)

Either way, a few secrets will help you with fall fashion on how to be financially frugal while also being fashion forward!

5 Fall Fashion Tips

1. Classic Styles

Buying  Tip: Look for classic or basic styles. Always a smart shopping move. Example: A pea coat, blazer or denim jacket. Why? The denim jacket has been in style, year after year, since the early 1960’s. It works. Every year it’s been accessorized (or not) to fit in flawlessly with trends.  From Madonna owning it with her “Material Girl” vibe to Rihanna’s street style, this basic jacket looks nothing but.  Bonus: a denim jacket goes with anything (THIS one I’m wearing is only $44 – and you get 50% off if it’s your first purchase!)

2. Accessories

Styling Tip: Easiest and quickest way to look on trend and within the current style guidelines for the season is to simply add on some accessories.  Remember this DIY style post about how I enhanced my shoes HERE with those vintage pins? You can do the SAME easy technique with any coat. An instant update and upgrade.

3. Trends

Trend Tip: Keep trends in mind, but keep them classicly styled. Camo owned it as top trend last year, and looks like it’s not leaving for this year either. When shopping “trendy” looks of the season, do-not-go-overboard. The popular “trend” of the design or style is enough. You don’t need to add much else (like embroidery, monograms, patches, pins…) to enhance it, and (honestly) you don’t want to add anything else. THIS camo sweatshirt is COZY, perfect with leggings and for lounging around with my kitty! (and it’s only $42 here)

4. Fall Colors

Color Tip: As much as black clothing is the go-to color for many, you do have other options. For the fall, deeper and warmer hues (violet or plum or any jewel tone) are great choices. Not only does it look rich and compliment the season, but those darker colors hide stains much better. Love black?  THIS coat I’m wearing is perfect because of the simple, classic style with chic sleeve details. And, with a pricetag of only $33 (here), how could I resist?

5. Cost per Wear

Budget Tip: Feel like splurging? Do it! Here’s why – think about the cost per wear of what you buy. Let’s do the math. If you purchase a coat that costs $300, it’s probs a quality item (and you will be able to wear it season after season). You love it and wear it everyday (as you do with jackets…) the next 2 months (60 days) this fall, and next year’s fall season (another 60 days), and maybe even the following year (yet another 60 days).

Add up the number of times you wear (or will wear) an item and divide that by the cost. For that $300 coat, you are wearing the coat for approximately $1.66 each time. You can afford that.

What you can’t afford is buying a bunch of $40 items that you wear only a few times or not at all. The cost per wear with this example is $10 each time you wear it. So, lesson learned? That less expensive item actually costs you more per wear.  Get it? Use that strategy when shopping.

What’s your Go-To Coat for Fall?
