ASIAN DESIGNERS MAKE WAVES

AT VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK FW21

Asian designers are a maintain stay at Vancouver Fashion Week. Vancouver is North America's gateway to Asia. With a large Asian community, Vancouver is the perfect stepping stone for Asian fashion designers to be exposed to the North American market. This season was no different. An exciting array of Asian designers presented their work. Fashion designers from Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan all presented collections. The collections presented were varied, artistic and the video presentations captivated the viewer

The rest of the world has always looked upon Asia as lands of myth and mystery. From the beginnings of western culture, we have always looked to the far east for inspiration, materials, and craftsmanship. With the opening up of global markets and mass migration, Asian designers are having a huge impact on the fashion industry. The diversity of cultures blending and mixing, and creating fashion is what makes Vancouver Fashion Week unique. Here are the collections of incredible fashion from Asia. These designers are making waves in what sometimes can be still waters.

  HARUMI HIYAMA

Harumi Hiyama is a Japanese designer who presented her collection entitled Giving Love. I mentioned Hiyama in a previous post on the digital fashion film, her film is a good example of a filmed fashion show in a studio environment. Through the film we enter a world of soft hues, flowers and random objects all creating a kind of gauzy ethereal  backdrop.  The ambience created is the perfect setting for the clothes. The garments are a series of oversized smock dresses with delicate embroidery and flowy silhouettes. The linen pleated smocks and short trousers are paired with crisp Victorian inspired collars and ruffles. The color palette includes soft pastels giving way to bright green, blue and even black. The collections linen and cotton creations have an overall effect of antique treasures being given new life. Feminine, floaty and finely detailed this collection gives a nod to western fashion history.

ISXNOT

Isxnot is a Japanese brand that presented its collection Wanderlust/Polaris in a moody film. Inspired by the apocalyptic nature of the current pandemic the film opens with PPE clad figures and a grim reaper like figure pursuing the heroine.  With  monochromatic black and white this designer gives a selection of hooded tops, tunic dresses with asymmetrical closures. White garments are striking with black outlines , and silhouettes are simple and detailed with straps and writing. The clothing is unisex. In a Japanese tradition of using simple clean lines this collection is minimalistic.

UUIN X AETER

From Taipei, Taiwan comes the collaborative work of Uuin X Aeter. The collection is a collaboration of two brands. One makes clothing and one produces handbags. The joint venture is the collection "Gardener" inspired by Taiwanese gardeners. Uuin, in a filmed fashion show gives a collection that is colorful and diverse. Bold patterns of bright green gingham, red and white prints, and the occasional black make cohesive compilations. The garments are dresses and pants layered with capes and coats. There is a 1970's vibe with long sleeveless vests, turtlenecks, and what we once called "pantsuits". Everything seems interchangeable, like an interlocking puzzle. The dresses and "pantsuits" are paired with rubber boots, like those worn by a gardener. A red coat with black and a maxi length tiered green dress are standout pieces. Overall the bold patterns are balanced with the monochromatic ensembles. The other partner to this collection is the bags by Aeter. There are sturdy-looking totes and crossbody bags in white, black, and brown. The bags are a swank addition to Uuin's chic and stylish clothing.

Blue Tamburin

Korean fashion brand Blue Tamburin brought us one of my favorite collections of the year "Against Every Discrimination". Designer Bomin Kim says this collection attempts to empower individuals with the courage to daringly express themselves while imbuing understandings of diversity and being different.

This collection takes us into the world of high-end tailored garments. The designer brings to the runway clothing that is from a European heritage. The women's and men's garments are made from various types of denim. Structured jackets, suiting, and coats, are styled with crisp white blouses and shirts. Blue in a variety of shades, is styled with rust, pink, and shades of brown. The collection includes some patterns, a bold striped shirting, an abstract rust print, and a floral. This collection is sophisticated and elegant, with a flair for intricate details.

RYZYORYUAN

Born and raised in China, the founder of Ryzyoryuan, Qiqiyuan, is now the youngest fashion designer in China. In 2019, he began Ryzyoryuan in Beijing, and since then has collaborated with more than 100 Chinese celebrities.

Ryzyoryuan presented one of the most experimental collections at VFW entitled Young Power, The City Style. This collection had extreme silhouettes, used a vast array of materials and processes like photo prints.  The video presentation made use of lighting and photographic effects playing with creating black and white silhouettes and elongating and distorting the picture. Using these artistic film processes was well suited to the garments presented.

While the inspiration is not know, the designer seems to be influenced by op and pop art. Large scale black and white geometric pattern is featured on a floor length dress. Another dresses uses a photo print of roses reminiscent of Andy Warhol's colored prints.  Large scale pieces are presented in bright colors including a red tulle dress that appears like a bouquet of roses. These clothes are well suited to the celebrity clientele Ryzyoryuan is courting. Anyone of these garments would be home on the red carpet of the American Music Awards or similar events where avantgarde fashion is celebrated.

VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK FW21

The digital presentation is different than us gathering together. Watching a fashion is so much more than models clad in designer clothes walking down a ramp. A fashion week is about fashion, of course. But it is also about the exchange of ideas and culture. Watching Vancouver Fashion Week FW21 is a way to take the pulse of the artistic and fashion culture of the world. Seeing designers from around the globe is a great way to learn and experience diversity. While the live fashion show has been put on hold and is changing and evolving, this new digital platform gives us the chance to see the talents of current and vibrant designers from Asia, Europe, and the rest of the globe. The Asian designers who presented their work showed diversity and unique talent. They also made some waves with new and exciting ideas.
