2017 Goal: Improving My Posture

Hello everyone,

I have over the years developed a pretty poor Posture and as a consequence of this I suffer from neck, back and shoulder pain quite frequently. I never really noticed until I woke up one morning with the worst pain, going all the way up my neck and into my right shoulder blade. I naturally just put it down to stress and got on with my day hoping it would slowly drift away but unfortunately it didn’t.

The pain went on for two weeks and I didn’t go anywhere without a heat pad clinging to my neck and hardcore painkillers in my purse. I couldn’t function as a normal human being it was just too much and I would only crumble on the floor in tears if I accidentally turned my head to fast.

Something had to be done, so I booked in with a physiotherapist and they took one look at me and said “your posture is poor”, apparently I was hunching myself over slightly almost like I had the whole world on my shoulders.

When I think back to all the times I’ve been sat down at a computer or anywhere actually, I had in fact been slouching. I had even been doing it when I walk, gosh what must I have looked like and why has nobody ever told me.

Would I tell anyone if they were slouching? probably not then but after knowing what I know now and my experience I think I might.

5 Reasons why you need to improve your posture..

1. No more back pain

Enough said really but having a good posture means that all your bones and muscles are where they should be and not being put under any unnecessary pressure or strain. So ditch the slouching guys!

2. Feel more confident

Walking taller with your shoulders back and head up makes you feel like a supermodel when your walking down the high street (well you hope you look like a supermodel). I definitely felt like I was noticed more, rather than sinking into the background. This might sound a little sad but I do in fact imagine that I am a top model and the streets are my catwalk. It does wonders for my confidence I suggest you give it a go.

3. Improves your appearance

Straightening your back and pulling back your shoulders naturally sucks in that tummy and pushes out your chest making you look taller and slimmer. It also helps tighten up those stomach muscles, I mean who doesn’t want that.

4. Breathe better

Sitting up right helps open up the airways and allows for more oxygen to flow through your body Improving energy levels and concentration.

5. More productive

When reminding myself to sit upright at my desk it was amazing the difference it made. I didn’t feel sluggish and generally felt happier. My shoulders didn’t have the strain from my usual crouching over so I felt more alive and my tummy was enjoying the breathing space instead of being pushed against the desk.

I am really going to try my best to continue my goal of improving my posture and I know its going to be hard to get rid of all the slouching bad habits but I’m not going to give up.
