While doing a Google search, I noticed something called “nose’” in its usual search tools. Curious, I opened it up and was greeted by the announcement of a ‘The new scentsation in search’
Now very curious, I read on:
•    ‘Coming to your senses: go beyond type, talk, and touch for a new notation of sensation.
•    Your internet sommelier: expertly curated Knowledge Panels pair images, descriptions, and aromas.
•    Take a whiff: the Google Aromabase – 15M+ scentibytes.
•    Don’t ask, don’t smell: For when you’re wary of your query – SafeSearch included.
This is where it started to get confusing for me… I mean how do you actually smell something through a computer? “Well they must have invented a USB device which you can attach to your computer and smell things…just like you can hear through your headphones”..I thought. But there was no such mention on the official page.
I simply clicked on ‘try Google Nose beta’…which opened up a search page for ‘diaper’…ugh!! Since the official page was of little help, I keyed in “what is Google Nose”…in Google (where else?)
And then I realized Google had thrown up one smart googly!! It’s an April Fool’s Day Prank from Google!!
I was sitting there at my desk and laughing at how Google had managed to fool me..and thousands of others no doubt. They even have a solution for smartphone users – But what about mobile? Well, Google has covered. Their “Android Ambient Odor Detection” allows you to collect smells on your phone…
Hilarious isn’t it? But on a more serious note, just think how much we have come to implicitly trust the great Google. However improbable it might seem, we simply seem to trust that if Google has come up with it, they must have devised some smart way to make it possible.
Google has done it again…I wonder how many people right now are trying to wrap their head around the concept that they can search Google by smell!!
