The Strength of Concrete – Is It The Best Open-Source CMS?

And so the world is agog with WordPress. Why it has been so – has been discussed elaborately and rightly so. It is an open-source, free and versatile CMS that can design practically anything. But then there are other CMSs available that are equally free and open-source. They may even possibly offer the same versatility that is preached for most CMS software. One such CMS is concrete5. Having seen an initial release in 2010 and a stable release as recently as 2016, it is already recognized and critically reviewed by many developers globally for its flexible platform. Concrete5 is a cross-platform CMS with an MIT software license. Based on the model-view-controller architecture along with object-oriented programming the main features consist of SEO compatibility, developer API, version tracking system and integrated server caching. The big question is – is this going to surpass WordPress?

Here Is A Short Comparison:

User base: It is a well-known fact that WordPress enjoys a wide user base spanned across subcontinents that would vouch for it. Concrete5’s fan base is good too. But the major difference lies in the levels of users. WordPress has serviced every user level, be it novice or experienced. Concrete5 attracts mid to higher level users. It is highly likely that a new user of concrete5 has already practiced their skill sets on WordPress.

Market Share:

Again concrete5’s market share is small and growing faster than any other open-source CMS. But yet its share remains a mere 3% as against WordPress which has a market share of about 80%.

Modules and Company Size:

Concrete5 has the ability to service large companies and is extremely good when building an ecommerce website. The software requires several levels of editorial control. WordPress can service companies of any size from small to the largest. It is easy to code and simple to use. The fact remains that ecommerce websites are not the preferred array of choice of every company. It has got to be more than just that.

Customization:

WordPress provides a number of themes and add-ons that can be used to customize the preparation. Concrete5 does have its own share of theme-base (to the tune of 1500!) but lacks the reach of WordPress. WordPress offers a number of add-ons that enable interfacing with several other platforms but concrete5 has a limited number of add-ons. Most add-ons on concrete5 have to be bought.

Conclusively it certainly depends on the users and their skill levels for their ability to use concrete5 or WordPress. To come to think of it WordPress has the popularity of a rock star and has innumerable documentation resources and third-party themes. It is managed by a strong community that offers extended services to its dedicated users. In comparison concrete5 does provide some balance between customization and abstraction with native sitemap features. But it would also help if concrete5 had more themes and some third-party resources to probably equate features with WordPress. Only time will tell!
