9 Free Shopping Cart Software Options - Pros, Cons + Comparison (2022)

Are you trying to set up an online shop and want to see a list of options when it comes to free Shopping Cart software?

We've put together a list of some of the most popular open source shopping cart software, these can be found below. The majority of these free shopping cart software solutions are eCommerce-specific, while others are CMS (content management system) add-ons, such as an Add-on for WordPress ecommerce.

CMSs, for those who are unfamiliar, are programs that allow you to publish content on the internet. For example, most sites are powered by WordPress, a content management system.

Drupal and Joomla are two other fairly popular content management systems.

Since CMSs have grown in popularity in recent years, an increasing number of people have begun developing add-ons for them.

As a result, there are endless varieties of eCommerce add-ons to choose from.

Before you open your store, there are a few things you should know:

Getting a domain name for your online store is the first step.

Choosing the most appropriate web hosting plan for your online store.

Here's a rundown of free shopping cart software.

1. Magento Community Edition - Free shopping cart software

Note that the commercial arm of Magento has been recently acquired by Adobe snd is now known as Adobe ecommerce.

Version: 2.4

  • SEO friendly
  • Mobile friendly
  • Create an unlimited number of categories and products
  • Supports physical products & downloads
  • Supports SSL (https) encryption

Magento has quickly gained popularity among etailers; a free community edition demo can be found here - this is the most feature rich free shopping cart software you can find. It's easy to see why this software has become so popular so quickly. The design is very attractive and professional.

Magento standard features (overview):

Sitemap, Multi-Currency Support, Multi-Language Support, Breadcrumbs, Search & Advanced Search Functionality, Sort Options, Create Categories And Subcategories, Popular Search Terms, Product Comparison, Wishlist, Contact Us Form, Discount Codes, Promotions, Shipping Rates, Tax Rates, Polls, Newsletters, RSS Feeds, Reviews, Email To A Friend, Attributes, Cross-Sell, Up-Sell, Attributes, Cross-Sell, Up-Sell, An HTML Editor (Wysiwyg).

Shipping options

UPS, USPS, FedEx, and DHL offer table rates, flat rates, free, and calculated shipping options.

Payment Options

Google checkout (Google Wallet), Paypal, Moneybookers, Credit Card, Check/Money Order, Bank Transfer, Cash On Delivery, Authorize.net, and other services are available.

Pros:

  • It has a professional appearance. There are numerous standard features.
  • There is an extension marketplace (or add-ons as I like to call them). Because Magento is so widely used, there are a plethora of extensions to choose from (themes, utilities, marketing, integrations, site management, customer experience, etc). Most Magento connect extensions appear to be simple to install — simply copy and paste the extension key into the input box and click install or upload a package file.
  • Allows you to make custom URL rewrites. Personally, I like this because some of the URLs in standard format appear to be too long. For example, instead of http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog/category/view/s/cellphones/id/8/, I'd rather use http://www.yourdomain.com/category/cell-phones.
  • The mobile view of a Magento store is fantastic because more and more people are shopping online using their mobile devices.
  • You can include a variety of item types in your list:
  • Simple products: This is a simple listing of items that are mailed.
  • Items that do not require shipping are referred to as virtual products. If you sell services, for example, this is how you would sell them.
  • Downloadable products: This term refers to files that can be downloaded.
  • Products that are grouped together are referred to as grouped products. If you sell bowling balls, for example, you might want to group them with bowling shoes and pins.
  • Configurable products are an excellent way to provide a variety of products.
  • If you sell products with a limited number of configurable options, bundled products are ideal.

Cons:

  • The search function is inadequate. For example, if you search for red furniture set using the site-wide search box, the search results page does not return the most relevant result (which should be Magento Red Furniture Set).
  • Also, this doesn't appear to be limited to this one item; I've tried searching for other items and received the same results. I then used the advanced search feature and typed red furniture set into the Name field, which gave me the correct result (Magento Red Furniture Set), but when I searched for furniture red set again, the results page gave me 0 results.

Ease of installation:

Before you install, double-check the server requirements.

According to what I've read, many people have had trouble installing Magento. Others have reported that the software has caused server compatibility issues.

Manual installations will necessitate a basic understanding of FTP, MYSQL, web servers, and other related concepts. For more information, see our Magento tutorials.

Fortunately, there are sites like SiteGround and Hostgator that provide simple Magento installation — more information can be found here and here. You can also sign up for Magento Go, which is essentially a hosted Magento plan.

Note: This software's download or hosted versions may differ from the version tested here.

2. PrestaShop Ecommerce Solution

Version: 1.7.8.5

  • SEO friendly
  • Mobile friendly (as of version: 1.5.2)
  • Create an unlimited number of categories and products
  • Supports physical products & downloads
  • Supports SSL (https) encryption

PrestaShop is a free eCommerce solution or free shopping cart software based on a freemium model, that is attractive, modern, and professional in appearance. A demo of the front-end can be found here.

Standard features of PrestaShop (overview):

Newsletters, Social Sharing, Print Version, Store Locator With Google Maps Integration, Sitemap, Multi-Currency Support, Automatic Image Resizing, Multiple Image Uploads Per Item, Breadcrumbs, Multi-Language Support, Create Categories And Subcategories, Sort Options, RSS Feeds, Compare Products, Subdomain Support, CSV Import, DB Backup, Employee Access To Backend, Advanced Order Management System, Merchandise Return (RMA) Options.

Standard shipping options

Charge Handling Fees, Carrier Fees, Geographical Zone Fees, and Ranges Of Fees.

Payment options

Hipay, Moneybookers, Ogone, Paypal, PaysafeCard, Allied wallet, Authorize.net, bank wire, Cash-Ticket, check, DIBS, Google Checkout (Google Wallet), Google Checkout (Google Wallet),

Pros:

  • The solution has a modern appearance, is SEO friendly, and includes a number of standard features.
  • Administrative tools, slideshows, quick/mass edit, export data, billing and invoicing, payments and gateways, prices and promotions, advertising and marketing, themes, and more are just a few of the add-ons available. Installing add-ons via the admin panel is simple: simply upload a file from your computer or the PrestaShop addons directory.
  • Excellent search functionality that can be tailored to your specific requirements. It also has a feature called Keyword Typos, which can be used to correct misspellings. You can save an alias like buket to return search results for bucket, for example.
  • Sell digital downloads or mail-order items.

Cons:

  • By default, the mobile view is not available. You can find such a module in the PrestaShop addons directory, but it may be expensive. This module, in my opinion, is necessary because more and more people are shopping online using their smartphones.
  • There is no support for shipping rates calculated by the carrier. I looked for add-ons but couldn't find anything.

Ease of installation:

Before you install, double-check the server requirements.

PrestaShop is moderately simple to set up if you have a basic understanding of FTP, MYSQL, web servers, and so on.

PrestaShop installation is simple with Hostgator — click here for more information on the software that can be installed quickly. Bluehost is another web hosting company that offers SimpleScripts PrestaShop 1-click installs.

Note: This software's download or hosted versions may differ from the version tested here.

Pros:

  • The layout of the store is appealing.
  • The search engine is working properly.
  • The B2B feature, which allows you to hide prices from the general public, create retail and wholesale customer groups, and offer quantity discounts, is one of my favorites.
  • There are many different extensions (add-ons) to choose from.
  • Sell digital downloads or mail-order items.

Cons:

  • By default, there are no SEO-friendly URLs. For instance, an SEO-friendly URL might look like this:
  • Instead, consider the following:
  • http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=18&product id=47
  • They do, however, have an SEO URL rewrite extension here (I was able to find 1 free extension).
  • By default, there is no mobile view. However, I was able to locate a mobile-friendly extension for your store in the OpenCart extension directory.

Ease of installation:

Before you install, double-check the server requirements.

Installing OpenCart is moderately simple — as with other software installations — and only requires a basic understanding of how FTP, MYSQL, and web servers work.

Bluehost is a web hosting company that offers SimpleScripts' OpenCart 1-click installs.

Note: This software's download or hosted versions may differ from the version tested here.

4. Zen Cart Ecommerce

Version: 1.5.0

  • Create an unlimited number of categories and products
  • Supports physical products & downloads
  • Supports SSL (https) encryption

Zen Cart is a well-known eCommerce platform that dates back to 2003. While Zen Cart does not have a live demo on their website, you can look at some live shops on the Zen Cart showcase directory. However, because many of the stores in the directory have been modified and redesigned, your clean install may not look like some of the stores featured in the directory.

Standard features of Zen Cart (overview):

Coupons, Discounts, Gift Certificates, Call For Price, Minimum Or Maximum Order Limits, Quantity Discounts, Attributes, Customizable Store Layout, Enable/Disable Products Or Categories, Create Categories And Subcategories, Integrate With Phpbb (Forum Software), Upload Multiple Images, Customer Access Control To Buying And Viewing Prices, Showcase Only Mode (A Store Without Prices And Checkout Functionality), Search & Advanced Search Functionality, META Tags, Sort Options, Search & Advanced Search Functionality, META Tags, Sort Options

Shipping options

Flat Rate, Free Shipping, Per Item, Per Unit, Store Pickup, Table Rate, And Zone Rates are some of the options available.

Payment options

Authorize.net, cash on delivery, free order, FirstData/Linkpoint, check/money order, and Paypal are all examples of payment methods.

Pros:

  • Has an excellent advanced search feature that allows you to search titles and/or descriptions, search for items within specific categories or from specific manufacturers, search by price range, and search by date added. To fine-tune search results, use and/or operators, double-quotes (for exact phrase match), and brackets.
  • The ability to use Zen Cart with phpBB.
  • On a per-product basis, the ability to set quantity or unit limit requirements (minimum or maximum).

Cons:

  • Most people will probably try to find a slightly more modern theme because the design appears to be outdated.
  • There is no mobile version.
  • Note: The Zen Cart team has announced that a 1.6 version is in the works, which will give the shopping cart a more modern look. It will be mobile-friendly because it will be responsive and built in HTML5. Version 1.6's release date is unknown.
  • Although URLs are not SEO-friendly, I was able to locate a URL rewrite plugin in the plugins directory.
  •
  • Plugins are a little tricky to set up.

Ease of installation:

Before you install, double-check the server requirements.

You should have no trouble installing this software if you have a basic understanding of how FTP, MYSQL, and web servers work.

If you don't feel comfortable installing this software manually, you might want to consider a Godaddy web hosting plan, which offers one-click Zen Cart installations. See this link for more information. You might also want to look into Hostgator, which also offers simple Zen Cart setups.

Note: This software's download or hosted versions may differ from the version.

5. VirtueMart Free Shopping Cart for Joomla

Version: 2.0.10

  • Create an unlimited number of categories and products
  • Supports physical products & downloads

  • Supports SSL (https) encryption

VirtueMart is an add-on for Joomla, a popular open source content management system. Please visit the Joomla and VirtueMart websites for more information on the CMS.

Standard VirtueMart features (overview):

Tax Rates, Shipping Rates, Discounts, Product Ratings And Testimonials, Attributes, Order Management, Group Pricing, Upload Multiple Images, Auto-Resize For Images, Coupon Codes, Social Sharing, Search, Sort Options, Related Products, Google Shopping Feeds, META Tags, and more are all available.

Shipping options

Rates can be customized based on the shipping carrier, country, zip code range, weight, currency, and VAT/tax (optional).

Payment options

Paypal, SystemPay, Payzen, Klarna, Moneybookers, and cash on delivery are all acceptable methods of payment.

Pros:

  • VirtueMart has come a long way for an eCommerce solution that began as a CMS add-on. VirtueMart is actually more popular and has more features than some standalone eCommerce solutions.
  • The layout and design are appealing.
  • The Joomla extension directory has a plethora of VirtueMart extensions (add-ons). Payment modules, shipping modules, themes, SEO-friendly URLs, and more are available. These extensions can also be installed via the administration panel by uploading an extension package or copying and pasting a package URL and clicking install.

Cons:

  • The VirtueMart demo shop, on the other hand, is mobile-friendly thanks to the theme it uses. As a result, a fresh VirtueMart installation does not include a mobile version. Even so, it's self-evident that a VirtueMart store can be made mobile-friendly.
  • The URLs in a fresh VirtueMart installation are not search-engine friendly.

Ease of installation:

Make sure to check both Joomla's and VirtueMart's system requirements.

Prior to installing VirtueMart, you must first install Joomla. Joomla only requires a basic understanding of how FTP, MySQL, and web servers work. The VirtueMart extension is fairly simple to install after installing Joomla — you can install the VirtueMart extension via the Joomla administration panel by simply uploading the extension package or by copying and pasting the VirtueMart package's URL location and clicking install.

Godaddy offers easy Joomla installing and so does Hostgator but you will still have to install the VirtueMart extension.

Note: Download version or hosted versions of this software may differ from the version.

6. osCommerce Open Source Online Shop

Version: 2.3.3

  • Create an unlimited number of categories and products
  • Supports physical products & downloads
  • Supports SSL (https) encryption

Since the year 2000, osCommerce has been a popular open source eCommerce solution. The osCommerce demo can be found here.

Standard features of osCommerce (overview):

Multi-Language Support, Multi-Currency Support, Database Backup, Order Management, Advertising Banners, Create Categories And Subcategories, Attributes, Quick Search And Advanced Search Capabilities, Bestseller List, Up-Sell, Product Reviews, Upload Multiple Images, Click To Enlarge Image, Breadcrumbs, Automated Display Of Specials, Newsletters, Shipping Rates, Tax Rates, Social Sharing, Sort Options, and more are all available.

Shipping options

USPS Zone Rates, Per Item, Table Rate

Payment options

NOCHEX, Paypal, PayPoint.net, Authorize.net, ChronoPay, Inpay, Ipayment, Moneybookers, check or money order SECPay, 2Checkout, PSIGate, RBS WorldPay hosted, Sage Pay, and Sofortüberweisung Direkt are some of the payment methods available.

Pros:

  • There are numerous payment options available.
  • UPS, USPS, FedEx, and other calculated shipping modules are available.
  • Excellent advanced search capabilities.

Cons:

  • The design is outdated.
  • Although there is no mobile version, you can make your store mobile-friendly by adding a contribution.
  • You must enable the option for search engine-friendly URLs in osCommerce by default. Unfortunately, this feature does not function properly. Rather than displaying the product or category name in the URL path, it simply converts?, =, and & to forward slashes. Fortunately, there are numerous contributions that can be installed. Many of these contributions are capable of producing URLs that are truly search engine friendly.
  • Contributions are a little tricky to set up if you don't know much about programming.

Ease of installation:

Because there are several versions of osCommerce available for download, you should pay close attention to each version's server requirements.

If you have a basic understanding of how FTP, MYSQL, and web servers work, OSC is moderately simple to set up.

However, if you're interested, Godaddy provides very simple osCommerce setups. For more information, click here.

Also, look at:

Because osCommerce contributions can be difficult to install, you might be interested in osCMax, which comes with a large number of pre-installed osCommerce contributions. While you can install osCMax yourself, SiteGround offers hosting services that include osCMax installation.

Note: This software's download or hosted versions may differ from the version.

  • Other plugins (add-ons) are simple to install — simply go to your site's WordPress admin panel, click on plugins, search for a plugin, and click the install link.
  • The search function is effective.

Cons:

  • Many features that are standard in other shopping cart solutions are only available in the Gold Cart edition of WP e-Commerce. For more information, go to this link. Multiple product images are only available in the Gold Cart edition, as are payment methods such as Authorize.net, DPS/Payment Express, Paystation, Sagepay, Eway access, Bluepay, and iDeal (ABN AMRO).

Ease of installation:

Please review the WordPress and WP e-Commerce server requirements. If your site already has WordPress installed, make sure the version you're using is compatible with WP e-Commerce.

Please keep in mind that WP e-Commerce is a WordPress plugin before installing. That means you'll have to install WordPress first. You should be able to manually install WordPress if you have a basic understanding of FTP, MYSQL, and web servers.

There's no need to worry if you're having trouble installing WordPress or prefer a more automated approach because many web hosting providers offer WordPress as a quick install option. Godaddy and Hostgator are two well-known companies that provide this service.

WP e-Commerce is a breeze to set up after you've installed WordPress. Simply go to the WP admin panel's plugin page, search for WP e-Commerce, and click install — make sure you're installing the WP e-Commerce plugin, not a plugin for WP e-Commerce.

Note: This software's download or hosted versions may differ from the version.

8. Ubercart Free Ecommerce Solution for Drupal

Version: 3.0

  • SEO Friendly
  • Create an unlimited number of categories and products

  • Supports physical products & downloads
  • Supports SSL (https) encryption
  • Ubercart is a free shopping cart module (add-on) for the Drupal CMS.

Ubercart standard features (overview):

Create Categories And Subcategories, Order Management, Attributes, Coupons, Enable/Disable Anonymous Checkout, Search, Upload Multiple Images, Automatic Image Resizing, Product Kits, Tax Rates, Shipping Rates, Breadcrumbs, And More. Compatible With Many Drupal Themes.

Pros:

  • Ubercart makes extensive use of Drupal's core features. The taxonomy feature, for example, is used to create categories and subcategories. The URL aliases feature also allows you to create SEO-friendly URLs.
  • The search function is effective.
  • Ubercart has a large number of modules (add-ons) that are simple to install using the Drupal admin panel.

Cons:

  • By default, there isn't a mobile version. Fortunately, responsive themes are available in Drupal's download & extend section.
  • For each product listing and category, you must manually create search engine-friendly URLs. I did, however, discover Drupal modules that can automate the process.

Ease of installation:

Ubercart is a Drupal module, so you'll need to install Drupal first. Check whether your server order web hosting plan is compatible with both Drupal and Ubercart before installing Drupal. Also, double-check that the Drupal version you're installing is compatible with Ubercart.

If you have a basic understanding of how FTP, MYSQL, and web servers work, Drupal is relatively simple to set up.

If you don't want to install Drupal yourself, there are a number of web hosting companies that offer simple Drupal installations. Among the companies that provide such services are Godaddy and Hostgator.

After you've installed Drupal, you can install Ubercart from your admin panel by uploading the Ubercart installation package or copying and pasting the Ubercart installation package's URL address into the modules section, then clicking the install button.

Note: This software's download version or hosted version may differ from the version reviewed here.

Payment options

2Checkout, Authorize.net, Barclaycard ePDQ, Card Save, Card Stream, Card Capture, CCNow, CharityClear, ChronoPay, CRE Secure, eWay, FirstData, HSBC API, Moneybookers, Nochex, Online Naira, Optimal Payments, PayJunction, PayOffline, Paypal, PayPoint, PaymentSense, Print Order Form, Realex Payments, RBSWorldPay, SagePay,

Pros:

  • It has a nice design.
  • The software is optimized for search engines.
  • There are numerous standard features.

Cons:

  • While the lite version allows you to create an unlimited number of products and categories, there are limitations on how many orders and customers your store can handle. Even if your store doesn't generate a lot of sales, if you plan on using the software for a long time, you may reach the limit. As a result, this software appears to be a trial version.
  • The lite version isn't optimized for mobile devices.
  • The only payment option that has been disabled in the lite version is Google Checkout.
  • CubeCart add-ons are difficult to come by. While I did discover a forum with a few add-ons, I was unable to locate an official directory.

Ease of installation:

Before installing CubeCart, double-check the server requirements.

If you have a basic understanding of FTP, MYSQL, and web servers, CubeCart is relatively simple to set up.

CubeCart does charge a fee for installation, which you can order here. Alternatively, you can purchase a hosting plan from SiteGround, which includes an easy CubeCart setup.

Note: This software's download or hosted versions may differ from the version.

Conclusion - Free Shopping Cart Software

When it comes to free shopping cart software, you'll find that there are quite a few good options, but what you'll notice is that most of these software platforms work more of a freemium sort of model, than being completely free.

Therefore, our recommendation would be to look at a few of these which seem to hit the feature set you require, calculate approximately what these would cost you to run and then start with an implementation of the software for your online shop!
