Shopify vs Wix (February 2024) – “Best Choice is Clearly…”

Tags: shopify

Which is better for an E-commerce website? Shopify or Wix? While Wix has been one of the more popular website builders in recent years, in this comparison of Shopify vs Wix, we’ll see if going with a Shopify online store is the better option as opposed to using a Wix online store plan.

Whether you’re getting ready to create and run your first online store, or you’re an experienced E-commerce seller looking for a larger scale online shopping platform, see our detailed comparison below.

Shopify Website Pricing and Plans

Shopify offers three levels of website plans: Basic, Shopify, and Advanced. Prices range from $29 mo. for the Basic Plan to $299 mo. for the Advanced Plan. These rates are for annual plans. You can also pay monthly, but the rates are a bit higher.

The Shopify Basic Plan, targeted for solo entrepreneurs, includes a huge and impressive amount of website and online store features suitable for all types of E-commerce sites. The mid level or Shopify Plan is geared toward online stores that need a small team running and maintaining the store. And, the Advanced Plan is for larger scale online businesses.

As you move up each level of website plan, your credit card rates go down, from 2.9% with the Basic Plan to 2.5% on the Advanced Plan.

Wix Website Pricing and Plans

While Wix offers a number of different website plans, if you need an online store, your choices are the Core, Business, and Business Elite Plans. The Core plan for basic E-commerce costs $27 mo. The Business plan for standard E-Commerce is $32 mo. And, the Business Elite plan for advanced E-Commerce is $159 mo.

While all of the above plans from Wix include basic online store functionality, some of it is limited. For example, there is a stated limit of 50,000 products. Automated sales tax calculation is limited to 100 transactions per month on the Business plan and 500 transactions per month on the Business Elite plan.

Shopify vs Wix: Differences

Advantages of Choosing Shopify Over Wix

  • Better Online Store Features
  • Better Website Speed and Performance
  • Superior Customer Support
  • Better Value with Website Plans

Advantages of Choosing Wix Over Shopify

  • Can be used for other types of websites

Shopify vs Wix: Features

While Wix aims to be a website builder for all types of applications, Shopify is completely focused on online shopping and those looking for an E-commerce website solution. Therefore, it’s not surprising that Shopify includes better online selling features with all of their website plans.

Both Shopify and Wix have done a good job streamlining and simplifying the website creation process. And, both user dashboards are easy to work with.

With Shopify, you can sell unlimited products, plus you get better features for customer segmentation, marketing, automation, and collaboration. And, you also get better value with all of their website plans.

In this category, Shopify is the winner for E-commerce.

Shopify vs Wix: Website Themes and Templates

Shopify Website Themes
Wix Templates

Shopify offers both free and paid website themes, while Wix includes free website templates. The Shopify themes provide better online store functionality and are slightly better looking in my opinion. And, the Shopify premium themes are far superior to the Wix website templates. On the other hand, Wix does offer more free templates than Shopify. While this category is close, we give the edge to Shopify.

Shopify vs Wix: Website Speed and Performance

Shopify is definitely the winner when it comes to website speed and performance. And, our test results were not close at all. While Shopify posted very impressive speed times and core web vitals, Wix had some of the worst speed results that we’ve seen and experienced.

Wix’s performance and structure scores, as well as their page loading times were poor. And, their Speed Index, Time to Interactive, and Total Blocking Time were especially bad. On the other hand, Shopify had good results across the board.

Shopify vs Wix: Customer Support

Shopify is the clear winner when it comes to customer support. Shopify provides 24/7 live chat support. The support agents are helpful, responsive, and friendly. I also like that Shopify automatically gives you access to your chat support transcripts, so you don’t have to request one.

Conversely, we find support lacking at Wix. And, a check of a Wix Facebook Help Group page reveals that others are also having a hard time finding answers and solutions to their issues.

For customer support, Shopify is the winner here.

Recommendation

While Wix has become popular for website building, when it comes to creating a successful online store, we prefer Shopify. Shopify is specifically designed for E-commerce, and the features and support you get are superior to Wix in our opinion. We also found that website speed and performance was much better with Shopify.

In our opinion, Shopify is the better choice for both beginners creating their first online store, as well as experienced E-Commerce sellers that need advanced features and better website performance.

Overall, in this comparison, Shopify is the clear winner. See our Shopify Review Ratings below.
