The OG Weekender: 9.1.17

Happy Labor Day Weekend! If you’re still searching for the best way to spend your long weekend, we have some great news. We’ve scoured the web for the latest events and activities happening right here in the Gem City, as well as the top Stories in marketing, advertising, tech, or design. It’s all a part of what we call the OG Weekender:

See Gary Hinsche’s latest work at The Front Street Experience Gallery

You may know Gary Hinsche as the Ohlmann Group’s Executive Design Director, but outside of the office, he is an exceptional local artist with his own studio downtown. If you want to see his latest work featuring geometrical designs, come to the Front Street Experience Gallery for his reception on Friday night between 5:00-9:00 p.m.

Take a step back in time at the Ohio Renaissance Festival

It’s opening weekend at the Ohio Renaissance Festival and this year’s event is bigger than ever. Step back in time to 16th Century England and enjoy the sights and sounds of over 150 costumed characters (including Queen Elizabeth). The festival includes nearly 100 shows each day, unique arts and crafts shops and traditional food and drink. This weekend, adult tickets are two for the price of one, and children under 12 get in free.

Check out Google’s new emojis

If you’ve used Emojis before, you may have realized that emojis look different on various platforms. For instance, an emoji sent via an Apple device can look completely different when viewed on an Android phone or Google device. Google’s emojis premiered in 2013 and were less like Apple’s perfectly symmetrical circular emojis and more like gumdrop shaped “blobs.” Now, Google designers have created a variation of the blob that’s more like a squishy circle for the new Android O. You can check out Google’s emoji evolution below:

Social Media News: Instagram Stories now available on the mobile browsers

While Instagram Stories still are not accessible on a desktop computer, users can view Stories on their mobile browser, not just with the app. The Stories feature has over 250 million users each day, which is more than Snapchat’s story feature (although Snapchat originated the concept). Instagram’s newly expanded mobile website will allow users with slower networks to access the app’s features, especially in countries like India and parts of Africa.
