Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a new 2D side-scrolling game set to release on October 20th, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. The game was announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation in June, where it was revealed that the new title would feature a fresh art style and gameplay mechanics.
The trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder did not reveal much about the story, but it showcased the new art style and gameplay elements. One notable addition to the game is the Wonder Flowers, which can be collected and used to change the levels in unexpected ways. For example, Mario can transform into a spiked ball or interact with living pipes. Collecting a Wonder Seed seems to revert the level to its original state.
In terms of power-ups, the trailer only showed the classic Mushroom and Fire Flower, but a new power-up that turns Mario into an elephant was also teased. The trailer also showcased new gameplay mechanics, such as grinding on rails, swimming up rainclouds, and navigating between the foreground and background. Mario and Peach can also use their hats to glide, indicating that this ability is not exclusive to Peach anymore.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder will have a traditional overworld map where players can select levels. Each level will have collectibles to find and a star rating for difficulty. The game will feature multiplayer, with up to four players being able to play at a time. Playable characters include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and Daisy.
Preorders for Super Mario Bros. Wonder are now available on Nintendo’s official store and major retailers. The game is priced at $60 for the standard edition and does not come with any preorder bonuses. However, players who have a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher can use it to purchase the game. It is also possible to preload the game before its official release.
