Python Dictionary setdefault() Method with example



Hello guys! Welcome back to another section of my tutorial on Python. In this tutorial guide, we are going to be studying about the Python Dictionary setdefault() method.

The Python Dictionary setdefault() method is quite similar to get() method, but it will set dict[key] = default if key is not already in dict.   

Syntax

The following below is the syntax for the Python Dictionary setdefault() method -

dict.setdefault(key,  default = None )

Parameter Details

  • key - Key to be searched for in the dictionary.
  • default - This is the value to be returned in case key does not exist.

Return Value

This method returns a value for the given key. If key is not available, then it returns default value None.

Example

The following below is a simple example -

#!/usr/bin/python

dict
= {'Name': 'Paul', 'Age': 20}
print "Value : %s" % dict.setdefault('Age', None)
print "Value : %s" % dict.setdefault('Sex', None)

Output
Below is the output of the above example -

Value : 20
Value : None
