Simple Web-Page Geometric Patterns: A Guide for the Perplexed

If you have been mystified by the inclusion of simple Geometric Patterns such as dots, half circles, waves, and triangles randomly inserted in modern web pages, you are hardly alone. These accents are called patterns; they essentially serve as visual confetti, and there is even a CSS library that collects most of them.

Contrary to what some web designers believe, these are patterns do not have hidden meanings. They have been around since the 1980s, and they have been quietly returning to design in general. The hard copy edition of the New Yorker magazine used this kind of visual confetti in the late 20th century, and it has recently sprinkled its web pages with these accents. In the past, you may have adorned a Microsoft Word document with glyphs and dingbats just for fun, but the use of random geometric doodads can be attributed to the Memphis Group.

The Memphis Group was the first and biggest international group of designers working under the Memphis Group philosophy: create simple, accessible and relevant forms that can be experienced differently and easily. The Memphis Group first emerged in the 1980s, but not in Tennessee; it emerged from a brainstorming session of Italian architects and designers who gathered to enjoy wine and Bob Dylan records somewhere near Milan. The name of this session comes from the Memphis blues reference made by Dylan in one of his songs.

The intent of the Memphis Group to combine a few elements of art and style made the 1980s a visually appealing decade that continues today, driven by creative teams of artists, architects, filmmakers, interior designers, and graphic designers who are part of the Memphis Group by virtue of believing in its aesthetic.

Over the years, the Memphis Group philosophy has manifested itself through work produced by the design team, and has inspired others to create projects that share the mission. Today, the Memphis Group has worked with various companies and groups to create new consumer products and projects. These projects are now being recognized worldwide, and the Memphis Group philosophy is being brought to life in places where consumers can experience Memphis as the source of inspiration for their own everyday life.
