In the world of web design, Navigation bars are the backbone of user experience; they are the structure of the layout, and they can set the tone for the rest of the website. Navigation bars are also the core part of many mobile apps. They have to be consistent with other layout elements, but they can also be somewhat whimsical in case we want to give visitors a touch of style and pizazz.
On major online forums dedicated to the discussion of web design, innovative navigation bars are often shared and dissected for the benefit of designers who wish to inject some style into their projects. A recent example was a post by a forum member who posted a video of a navigation bar that shuffled child elements along with a clever animation; the overall effect resembled the experience of the Windows Solitaire card game. This cool effect, which has been around for a few years, is known as MixItUp or Isotope. Most of the heavy lifting in terms of achieving the desired effect is done by means of CSS transitions plus JavaScript.
Not everyone agrees on the use of flashy elements for a navigation bar; after all, as long as we're using a standard for the header for our mobile apps or websites, there should not be a need to overly impress visitors. A navigation bar is one thing while a stylish navigation element is another. You can have a navigation bar that's different and more subtle on smartphones but more elaborate on tablets and desktop browsers. On mobile apps you might use what we call the "sidebar," where everything sits next to the main window of the app and you'll have different buttons that make navigation easy to comprehend.
With the vertical layout we'll see something that's a little different, and we should not venture to add flair or flashy animations. It's not going to be so subtle because it's not going to be so simple to follow if things are moving around. For this reason, the Isotope code may be overkill for horizontal navigation bars if the viewport does not offer enough space, and this is often the case with smartphones.
