Second Annual Solo Smash Tournament

On Saturday, September 17th, the fine folks at Powerhouse Animation Studios held the Second Annual Solo Smash Tournament. Our own Adam Conarroe graciously organized and hosted the event, opening his home to the bloodbath that would ensue. With last year’s victor having renounced his throne, the remaining hopefuls vied passionately for the glory of the gorgeous glass Powerhouse Super Smash Brothers Grand Champion trophy.

After several hours of arduous battle, three righteous victors claimed their place as the top three super smash champions.

In third place, Ben Tanzer as Fierce Deity Link.

The tournament forced Tanzer to defeat that which he was sworn to protect, the Princess Zelda. Afterward he came face-to-face with the most harrowing opponent of all: himself (in the form of another person also playing as Link). When asked about his path to third place, Tanzer looked away grimly and said,

“If you meet the Buddha in the road, you must kill the Buddha.”

In second place, Cassie Urban as Pit.

In her first trail, Cassie suffered vicious defeat by the hands of the nefarious Bowser. Thrown into competition with The Defeated, Cassie glimpsed a chance for redemption. She quickly rose to the top of the Defeated. But here, she faced her last remaining opponent, the son of her rival: Bowser, Jr. Before their battle, Bowser, Jr approached Cassie and said, “I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to defeat you.” Cassie turned back and sharply said,

“I’m sorry, but I’m not about to lose.”

Like a phoenix from the ashes, she destroyed the son of her rival and took second place.

In first place, Adam Conarroe as Mewtwo.

Adam’s story begins when he was but a babe in the woods at Powerhouse Animation. Like Prometheus, he brought Super Smash Brothers to the studio, slowly indoctrinating our crew one person at a time until the dawn of the First Annual Solo Smash Tournament. Also like Prometheus, the gods punished him for his hubris. Despite his many years of training, he took second place in the 2015 tournament, shaming his loved ones.

But in spite of his defeat, Adam followed his heart. After coming in second place as Mario, he decided to train under his favorite character, Mewtwo, a fickle and disobedient avatar but one he truly loved. He trained stoically for a year, amassing losses yet slowly building skill in his new form.

Finally, the chance came to prove himself at the Second Annual Solo Smash Tournament. Contender after contender fell in the face of the unexpected challenger Mewtwo. Striking down even his fellow Pokémon Pikachu, Adam swiftly took the upper hand and rose to first place with little in his way to contest his power. Reflecting on his final challenger, Bowser Jr., Adam stared thoughtfully into the distance, saying to himself,

“He was afraid to fight me…

But oh well.

A victory is a victory.”
