Happy Anniversary!

I’m not really one for celebrating anniversaries. I’m not married and my partner and I don’t make a fuss over ‘we met on this day 10 years ago’ (and not only because we can’t really remember the date). You have a moment of ‘ahh, wow, how time flies’ and then what? You get on with the day to day stuff of actually being a couple sharing your lives and your home, and hopefully, you feel loved enough day to day to not require an over-priced bunch of flowers once a year.

Luckily, I'm with someone who feels the same, and doesn’t take it personally when I don’t present him with the Hallmark equivalent of a #blessed social media update (vom).

I do find the whole ‘one year is paper, five years is wood’ wedding anniversary gift thing interesting though - you can be a bit creative and put a spin on the traditional themes. Although it seems you have to wait it out for at least a quarter of a century to start getting to the good stuff...

I’m thinking about these things as I recently celebrated an anniversary Hallmark definitely doesn't make cards for  – 6 months since giving up my job and going freelance. In relationship terms it’s still so new! The years I spent building it up were like dating; now my business and I have made a real commitment and moved in together.  Even now we’re still figuring things out about each other, working around the little quirks and bad habits, but the sheen of novelty remains. Who knows what's to come (I might have to be unfaithful and find another source of income) but for now, things are good.

Not to say the relationship is perfect. The business can be demanding and sometimes unreasonable, and takes up a lot of my energy. But I think it’s bringing out the best in me. And unlike others I’ve had in the past, I can really see a future with this one.

One last thought - if one year is paper I can only imagine what the 6 month equivalent would be – hair? Dust? Answers on a postcard please.
