The name George Eliot might sound at first like it may be a male's name but it is actually the pen name of Mary Anne (Mary Ann, Marian) Evans who was an English novelist, journalist and translator, and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era.  She used a Male pen name, she said, to ensure her works would be taken seriously, even though there were already female authors during her time.
