Wendy Hudnall: Photographer, Graphic Artist, Educator

Artists and Photographers tend to view life differently than the average person. Call it perspective. Call it focus. Call it whatever you want, but when these people take in an image or vista, and they see more than what’s actually there. They see beyond the image into the art.

Photographer Wendy Hudnall has this quintessence in spades. Her art has been called surrealist. It’s been called other-worldly, but more frequently than these, most people call it gorgeous. “The biggest reaction I often get,” Hudnall says, “is people saying, ‘I can’t believe that’s real.'”

“There are a lot of Digital photographers out there that like to say that the photographs that they capture are not edited, and it may be controversial to say this, but that’s BS.” For Hudnall, the act of manipulating an image begins before the shutter ever opens. “If you’re shooting in raw you’re capturing the entire gamut of information the camera can capture. Straight out of the camera that image is soft and flat. The camera doesn’t make creative decisions; you do, in the digital darkroom.”

Hudnall’s transition from business to art was a difficult one, as it is for many aspiring creatives, but for Wendy, it was made all the more sensitive because the decision was catalyzed by the death of her father. “I feel like every picture that I take is a picture postcard to my dad. A place that he would love or that we would have shared together, or would have meant something to him.”

“After Dad passed away I realized that life was too short and I was spending too much time doing something I didn’t enjoy. I didn’t want to spend my life working for a paycheck, so I decided then and there to make a commitment to my passion.”

Commitment may be an understatement. Wendy is a serious student and a voracious reader. She spends hours at a time poring over works from successful photographers and bulking up her technical skills by reading through websites on the latest advances in photo-technology. “I study a lot,” she says, “I am always trying to learn. Digital Photography is constantly evolving.  Every day there’s something new. Photographers are pushing the limits of what we can do. If you’re not trying to learn new things and adding to your regimen you aren’t growing.” And if you’re Wendy, you’re always growing.

Education is woven into Wendy’s soul. After a short time as a professional artist, she quickly realized that while many other photographers were great with a camera, most didn’t possess the skills necessary to bring their pictures to the highest level. So Wendy, never one to shy away from a challenge, decided to take the problem head-on. She now offers freelance education and image consulting for artists who want to get the most out of their image software. Additionally, for those not interested in learning a new skillset, she offers editing and output sharpening post-production services.

Prolab Digital is excited to announce that our clients now have access to Wendy’s bevy of skills and expertise.
