Design Trends: Printing on Aluminum

It’s not just for baked potatoes or conspiracy theorists anymore, artists are now turning to Aluminum to display their latest museum-quality work.  Aluminum is all the rage among trendy photographers and interior designers, as it offers a range of display options, from a scratchy, burnished-metal industrial look, to liquid, glossy, ultra modern aesthetics.

Far and away, aluminum prints have been our most requested item this year. Check out the article we did on Moses Hacmon’s amazing exhibit “Faces of Water” as an example.

Prolab Digital has incorporated a method of printing directly into the surface of aluminum sheets using the latest in image production equipment.  This means that the ink is fused and permanently sealed into the metal and can never be rubbed off.  With the addition of their brand new Epson 11880 printer with dye-sublimation technologies, and Geo Knight 931 heat press, Prolab Digital is unrivaled in North America for the size and quality of their aluminum print productions. HD aluminum is available up to 48”x96” and the UV Flatbed process is capable of 96”x120” inches.

Aluminum is unique in the way it interacts with light in the room, in some cases it makes the printed image appear to be in motion as the viewer walks by. It’s also long-lasting, guaranteed to outlive some conventional printing methods by decades. Brushed raw, or covered with a protective baked-on white enamel surface, this versatile metal can be tweaked to meet the ambiance of virtually any display space.

Prolab Digital has already filled an unprecedented number of orders of aluminum prints for artists and designers who want to jump ahead of this innovation in visual display. Prolab Digital’s UV flatbed printer will reproduce a file directly onto aluminum Di-Bond material up to 1/8” in thickness, with a maximum size of 48” x 96.”

Here is a quick tutorial walking you through our aluminum printing options.
