Three Picks from the Kāpiti Arts Trail

Artist Interviews

The arts trail is this week!

I’m putting the finishing touches on some last minute artwork and am looking forward to visitors in my studio over the next two weekends.

I was recently interviewed, along with two other Kapiti artists – Micheline Robinson and Studio Reset, by the The New Zealand Festival of the Arts.

You can read the article here: Three Picks from the Kāpiti Arts Trail.

And a reminder – my studio will be open 7-8 and 14-15 November 2020 from 10am to 5pm each day.

I’m listing #36 in the brochure.

The New Zealand Festival of the Arts

It was an honor to be included in their Three Picks feature as The New Zealand Festival of the Arts is my most favorite art event in New Zealand. I always attend 5 or 6 performances and enjoy the variety of experiences offered.

Along with attending several dance and music, this year I also took a virtual reality trip to the moon.

One of the highlights from the Festival was in 2016 seeing Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring performed with a layer of dirt on the floor so the dancers transformed into a bit of a grimy mess by the end. It was an enthralling performance.

With the addition of the dirt, this might have topped my experience of seeing this powerful ballet performed with a full orchestra at the Lincoln Center in New York City back in 1991.

In 2018 the performance of Swan Lake / Lock Na heala during the New Zealand Festival was another memorable event. It was an intense reinterpretation of swan lake with a lot of feathers involved, which was quite fun as we were in the front row.

I am eagerly awaiting the next festival in 2022.

Inspired by Performance

A couple of sketches made the week after seeing Swan Lake, 2018

I attend live theater, music and dance performances for the personal joy of experiencing live art.

And it is no surprise that the colors and movement from these events seep into my artwork. The above digital sketches were made in the days following the feathers performance.
