Art and Passages from the Book Why Am I Afraid to Love? by John Powell

The pages with art shown in this article are from successive editions of Why Am I Afraid to Love? by John Powell, S.J.  The first edition is a 1967 pamphlet and there was a visually revised paperback edition published in 1972 with new editions released in later years.

Book subjects for commentary include Christian religious scriptures, psychology orientations, philosophical points of view, and such poems as "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost.  Two perspectives about the nature of being human offered by John Powell in this book are about the need for friendship and individual maturing: ". . . what will move one person might well leave another cold" and "Sexual indulgence is very commonly a sign of regression to primitive and infantile forms of satisfaction and gratification."

Copyright pages of Why Am I Afraid to Love? editions present the credit "Designed by Patricia Ellen Ricci."  The artistic renditions in books by John Powell may stimulate thought among people accustomed to being attentive to visual sources of inspiration.  Some readers may recognize symbols and metaphors in some of these images that show links with previous blog articles and my preceding documented nonfiction case study.

After reading Why Am I Afraid to Love?, my perception due to my personal path of spiritual discovery in life in relation to 'God' (or 'The God Force') is that it is perhaps reasonable for some individual human beings to make an effort for developing one's perspective concerning learning about 'God' and 'being a friend to God' in relation to the question posed by the author in the opening paragraphs: "What does it mean to love God . . . ?"
