The 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, titled The Milk of Dreams, will open to the public - April 23-November 27 - at the Giardini and the Arsenale; it will be curated by Cecilia Alemani and organised by LaBiennale di Venezia chaired by Roberto Cicutto.

The Milk of Dreams takes its title from a book by Leonora Carrington - 1917–2011 in which the Surrealist artist describes a magical world where life is constantly re-envisioned through the prism of the imagination. It is a world where everyone can change, be transformed, become something or someone else. The exhibition The Milk of Dreams takes Leonora Carrington’s otherworldly creatures, along with other figures of transformation, as companions on an imaginary journey through the metamorphoses of bodies and definitions of the human.

The Milk of Dreams will includes over two hundred artists from 58 countries. More than 180 of these artists have never been in the International Art Exhibition until now. For the first time in its 127- year history, La Biennale will include a majority of women and gender non-conforming artists, a choice that reflects an international art scene full of creative ferment and a deliberate rethinking of man’s centrality in the history of art and contemporary culture.

Cecilia Alemani is an Italian Curator based in New York who has organized many exhibitions of contemporary artists. She is currently Director and Chief Curator of High Line Art, the programme of public art in New York, and is the past curator of the Italian Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2017.
