8 Things to STOP Doing on Your WordPress Website

8 Things To STOP Doing On Your WordPress Website

Here are some simple 8 things you should not be doing on your Wordpress Website.  These changes are common standard web trends and improvements to usability.

1. Make your logo big

People can quickly tell it’s your Logo. A large logo takes up a lot of screen real estate.  The more space it takes up the less opportunity you have to showcase your services or extra content on the page.  You do need a logo present on your website, just doesn’t have to be big.

2. Don’t make your call to actions tiny

Buy now button, location address to your restaurant, phone number etc… make sure your call to action is big. You want people to be able to see your call to action in 3 seconds. Don’t make people search the site for the things the key information they want.

3. Week Content

Don’t put small phrases of content on your site.  Google loves content… and you will continue to see the saying ‘Content is King’.  Google reads large content to help you get found on google searches.

4. Old Content

You don’t want to have old outdated content.  If you have someone coming to your site in the second half of the year you don’t want them reading a Happy New Year Message on your homepage. Make sure your content is current and up to date.  This also includes updating your copyright date in your footer.

5. Stop with the distractions

If you have a call to action on your website and you have a lot of information or unnecessary distractions or images will reduce the chances of conversion. People can easily get distracted.

6. Remove Slide Shows

The trend is moving away from slide shows. No one sticks around to look around slideshows. People are time poor and skim websites looking for the information they need. Instead of hiding the information in slideshows, put the information on your homepage. Slideshows also slow down your website and the slower your website is the less chance your user will wait for the website to load.

7. Slow load time

Try to make your website as fast as you can. There are many ways to do this including optimising your site.

8. Pop-Ups

Stop doing pop-ups – or at least change the way they work. Stop putting Popups as soon as people visit your website. They annoy people more than they are beneficial.  Google will also penalise you on mobile if you show popups straight away.  Instead, change your popups to take up less real estate in the bottom right-hand corner, you can control when they show up e.g. on page scroll or exit intent. Few popup plugins to check out: MailMunch, PopupAlly Pro, and Bloom.
