Adbusters, September/October 2016

Heil Trump! Amazing how the simple placement of a barcode immediately tells you a whole story by itself! Brilliantly smart! Read more about this issue, and what “cool fascismo” actually means, here.

Bona, August 2016

To celebrate Women’s Month, Bona has produced an extremely strong and beautiful cover, with five ‘fierce’ women featured on it — Sindi Dlathu (Thandaza in Muvhango), Dawn Thandeka King (Mangcobo in Uzalo), Nobuhle Mimi Mahlasela (Aggie in 7de Laan), Noluthando “Nolly” Meje (Zukisa in Isidingo) and Andisiwe Dweba (Getty in Generations The Legacy). Bona is published in four languages (English, Xhosa, Sesotho and Zulu) and you may play spot-the-difference between all the covers!

Here’s a behind-the-scenes discussion on “[b]eing a woman in 2016 and dealing with bullies on social media”:

Crumbs (Devon edition), August 2016

Crumbs publishes three versions with each issue, each focusing upon a different region/area. The Devon edition went with the burnt mielie (corn) option. What would have been truly impressive was if those cover lines had been onto the cob, but existing creativity is cool and unique enough for me! The full issue is available free online.

Época

A simple silhouette of an athlete, a subtle Olympic logo (all in black) [the dot in i — ed-at-large], and one word… “RIO!”. Perfection.

MAD, Issue 541

I want to petition for a MAD-emoji! It’s not every day you see a magazine shouting the word “shit” on its cover, but MAD not only gets away with it; it adds to the appeal that it’s not taking itself seriously.

TIME (US), 11 August 2016

Trying to write something short and witty to illustrate the brilliance of this cover image and its one word cover line doesn’t do it justice. I’ll let the cover speak for itself instead — in all its melting-glory!

MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The anonymous (for now) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
