Apotheon Review ~ “Cover That Up Helios!”

Apotheon Review

“Cover That Up Helios!”

Apotheon was a game that surprised me. It drew me in enough so that I purchased the game, but the early parts of it left me feeling kinda…   meh. But soon I found myself lost deep in this interesting and beautiful world. I hope you enjoy my Apotheon Review!

You start out as Nikandrios, and average human who fights back against the oppressive bandits and is granted blessings from the goddess Hera. Soon you are put on a journey through Mount Olympus to gain favour from the other gods and to fight back against Zues. This quest takes you to the different gods and their various realms. Each are quite different from each other and offer interesting and unique challenges to face. A personal favourite of mine being Apollo’s questline, where he throws you in jail and you must fight your way out with the help of the very naked Helios.

The combat is fairly easy to pick up, and once you get going, quite easy to get good at. After a few objectives you will be swinging around those swords, dorus, and maces like a real Greek champion. This to me was one of the most satisfying aspects of Apotheon. Engaging in competitive battles, finding your opponents weak spot and exploiting it is equally challenging, fun, and satisfying.

One of the knocks against Apotheon is its simplistic design, limiting the variation of encounters the player can have. I would definitely dispute this. Regularly the game surprised me with what it could do. The different objectives rarely had me doing the same thing twice. Changing enemy types up regularly and adding in new and special weapons to keep the combat fresh. These are much appreciated additions to the game and help to keep Apotheon flowing smoothly.

The one point against Apotheon that I do concede is that the controls are a bit wonky. The inventory management on both the keyboard and the gamepad are difficult at best; on the PC making players press buttons with awkward hand positioning. Trying to switch weapons under pressure is difficult, and expect to get hit while doing so. What could have made this system much better is a preset or hotbar where you can place your favourite weapons and items.

Overall I really enjoyed my time with Apotheon and would recommend it to any fan of 2D adventure/RPG platformers, as this is a welcome addition to the genre.
