part of the doer Spy x Family such an uplifting anime is capable of walking the line between a lighthearted comedy about an odd couple family and a serious drama about the threat of war. While the show’s tonal whiplash at times makes Eguchi a difficult line to read, his experience of voicing past action sequences, which includes shouting, helps him steer his performance as a soft-spoken father into a penny-hard spy.

Speaking of action scenes, Eguchi said that one of his favorite scenes Spy x Family Wars from the anime never happened in the manga.

“My favorite scene, I think [in] episode five, where Anya manages a castle and Bondman or Loid has to save Princess Anya,” Eguchi said.

The best and worst of voicing Loid Forger

Even though Loid is a family man, albeit undercover, Eguchi told me that the hardest part of portraying Loid involved his talkative super-spy persona.

“The hardest part is his inner monologue,” Eguchi said through a translator. “He talks a lot.”

Unlike the manga, which uses speech and thought bubbles to give readers insight into Loid’s plans to address both local and global threats, Eguchi said Loid has limited time to speak his mind. Fans of the show will note that despite being an all-knowing spy, Loid’s tendency to overthink led to a comedy of mistakes about his supposed nuclear family. For example, Loid once thought that Yor’s bad mood had something to do with his failure as a husband, when in reality Yor was trying (and failing) to hide the fact that he really was. shot in the butt while on one of your assassin missions. To be fair, it’s an honest mistake in the Forger family.

“I actually haven’t started recording my lines yet, so I’m looking forward to what I’m going to see,” Eguchi said.
