Most Disappointing Games Of All Time

Here at gamesGRABR, we love to talk about what games we’re really excited about, or what great games we’ve been playing. However, every so often we come across as a game that we’ve been stupidly excited about or was hyped so much and have just been a total let down. Following this, we’ve decided to create a list of the most disappointing games of all time, some of them recent and some of them vintage, we’ve considered everything here and so we present to you our top 10!

10. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5
Xbox One | PS4

Released just last year, Tony Hawk fans must have been absolutely pumped for this new addition to their everlasting collection. It was released on PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 so it was pretty easily accessible. Reviews of the game said that it was too simplistic and the environments were bland and an array of technical issues. It seems that there wasn’t really anything to set this game apart from any of its predecessors, which left fans sad and disappointed. Is it time for Tony Hawk to throw in the gaming skateboard? With this release, it’s seems like the best idea.

9. Haze
PS3

Haze is a first-person shooter that was released on the PS3 back in 2008. In simple terms, the game is set in a dystopian future where the Mantel Corporation use a “nectar” drug to make their soldiers super strong, making them nearly invincible. Players take on the role of Shane Carpenter who is originally a Mantel Soldier but decides to go rogue after seeing what the drug does to his fellow soldiers. The game was hyped a while before its release and even had some comparisons to Halo (a huge, huge comparison to make even if the game lived up to the hype), but in the end it turns out that Haze had bad level designs and stereotypical characters and an average Metacritic score of 55.

8. Sim City
PC

SimCity is a franchise that was first released in 1989 and has been released on pretty much every platform you can think of. It is generally mistaken as a spin-off of the life simulation game The Sims. Basically, the aim of the game is to build a fully functioning city and this takes a hell of a lot of time and patience, two things that most people who live in the twenty-first century don’t have. Surprisingly, the franchise has had a total of sixteen games released in seventeen years and a number of spin-offs.

7. Hotel Mario
Philips CD-i

Struggling to remember this game on your beloved Nintendo console? That’s because it wasn’t even released on Nintendo, they gave the rights to use their characters to Philips after deciding to not give the rights to Sony in 1994. It was released on the Philips CD-i, a weird hybrid of a CD player and home gaming console. Hotel Mario is a puzzle game where characters play as Mario who is on the hunt to save Princess Toadstool, who is located in Mushroom Kingdom. You must guide Mario through a number of Koopa hotels basically by shutting doors and working your way through the levels; so random.

6. Star Wars Battlefront
Xbox One | PC | PS4

If you look at this game from a fan’s point of view then you’ll be able to easily point out so many massive flaws. While Star Wars Battlefront sold really well and overall had pretty good reviews, it was ridiculously over-hyped. When the game was first released, it was over-priced for what it was and if you took away the fact it had a Star Wars storyline and any elements that made it typically Star Wars then you would be left with a below average first person shooter. Not only that, but with pretty much every other Star Wars game you would have the option of playing a single player campaign that was closely interlinked with the films, however, in Star Wars Battlefront you only get training in single player and the rest is largely online – that doesn’t sit well with us at all.

5. Dark Void
PC

Dark Void was released six years ago on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The game is a weird mix of on-foot and mid-air action where players can use a hover pack and a jet pack to quickly switch between ground action and flying about from place to place. Players basically have to destroy an alien race that was previously banished by the human race but have somehow returned to earth. The game’s reviews were pretty average and IGN summed it up pretty perfectly in their review saying: “Dark Void is one of those games you’ll play, beat and forget it ever existed.”

4. Superman 64
N64

Unsurprisingly released on the Nintendo 64, Superman 64 is an action-adventure game that was released in 1999 and was based on the television series. The game was largely unfinished due to constraints put on the game by DC comics and Warner Bros. Reviews have also said that the game was of a poor quality, even though it was remade for Playstation and Sega Saturn, it didn’t ever get a release due to issues again with the license, which meant by the time it was completed, it was cancelled. In the game, Superman must save his pals from that pesky Lex Luthor, who trapped them in a virtual version of Metropolis.

3. E.T
Atari 2600

Based on the extremely successful blockbuster, E.T is an action-adventure game that was released on the Atari 2600 in 1982. We couldn’t help but put this game on the list because even if it didn’t become famous for being an incredible game (it wasn’t great, trust us), it did become famous for another reason. It’s been said that this game was massively over-produced and didn’t sell as well as originally expected so word on the street is that millions of the unsold cartridges were buried in landfill in New Mexico. There’s even a whole documentary about it called Atari: Game Over, check it out!

2. Aliens: Colonial Marines
Xbox 360 | PS3 | PC

Released in 2013, Alien Colonial Forever was a massive let down to everyone in the gaming community. The game was set on events that take place after the third Alien film in the franchise. It was originally released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC and was set for a release on the Wii U but was eventually cancelled and never made the release. The game even faced a lawsuit, which was filed by Roger Damion Perrine and John Locke who claimed that Sega and Gearbox had falsely advertised the game by showing demos that were not accurate of the final product. Sega has suggested settling the lawsuit from their part and agreed to pay $1.25 million!

1. Duke Nukem Forever
Xbox 360 | PS3 | PC

Remember the Duke Nukem games? The hilarious games with witty humour and a character you can make go to strip clubs and take a piss? Hours of endless fun, not to mention the controversy it created over its portrayal of women (probably its biggest downfall). Well, Duke Nukem Forever is pretty much the opposite of what you know (apart from the controversy), it’s lousy graphics and outdated humour really disappointed us gamers. What could have been a great addition to the franchise, this game instead destroyed any glimmer of hope it may have had to carry on to the next gen consoles.

So that’s our list of disappointing games, do you disagree with any? Have anything else you’d like to add? Let us know in the comments!
