Among many enticing announcements at WWDC23, we found out that the Remake of Layers of Fear, a psychological horror, will be coming to macOS as well. And spoiler alert, it’s already here!
Here’s everything you need to know to start playing Layers of Fear on macOS including the game’s price and system requirements.
Layers of Fear Mac release
Initially shown during Apple’s WWDC23 conference, Layers of Fear (2023) was released on June 15th and is already available for purchase on Steam for $29.99. You can also get a Deluxe Edition that includes the game’s art and soundtrack for $39.97.
If you are reading this before June 22nd, 2023, there’s currently a 25% introductory offer on the game. So it might be the best time to buy it for yourself or your friends.
Layers of Fear Mac system requirements
These are the minimum and recommended system requirements for Layers of Fear on macOS (taken from Steam).

As you can see, any device with an M1 or M2 chip can run the game. But you might need a more high-end device to really take advantage of the tech used in the game new to the Mac platform.
A New Layer of Fear with UE5 and Ray Tracing
Besides using Metal3 and Metal FX upscaling for better performance, Layers of Fear is the first game on macOS to use Unreal Engine 5. This basically means that the game will look great and double down on the atmosphere of its surreal environments.
What brings Layers of Fear to an even higher level is Ray Tracing support. The first of its kind in the history of Mac gaming. It is unclear which Apple silicons will allow you to use Ray Tracing in Layers of Fear but it’s possible that M1 chips will not be able to use it.
Finally, the game also supports HDR and 4K for high-resolution screens. It’s important to note that 4K is only available on M1 Max chips and newer.
What does the Layers of Fear release mean for Mac users?
We talk a lot about how Apple is improving the gaming experience on macOS by making the platform far more accessible to developers and showcasing examples like Death Stranding and Stray. But the introduction of Layers of Fear tells us more about the tech Apple aims to bring to its users.
Layers of Fears is the first high-profile Unreal Engine 5 game to come to macOS. On top of showcasing the gaming potential of macOS, it also serves as living proof that Unreal Engine 5 are fully compatible with macOS. Unreal Engine is by far one of the most popular and powerful engines used for game development. Bringing UE5 games to macOS will help take the gaming experience on Apple products to the next level.
