Argonus and the Gods of Stone has a great new ending

There were many things that I loved about Argonus and the Gods of Stone, an adventure game that fully embraces Greek mythology, but its ending wasn’t one of them. In fact, the original ending mostly consisted of the game cutting out before you overcame the game’s villain, opting instead to imply a victory you neither see nor have a hand in. This made sense to a certain degree; action games can cap things off with a giant battle, but allowing the player to take part in a fulfilling adventure game victory is significantly harder thanks to how hands-off the mechanics are. Argonus and the Gods of Stone didn’t catch fire the way it probably should have, so it would have been easy for developer Zojoi to abandon the project and move on to something more mass market-friendly. They deserve tons of credit for going back and reworking the ending anyway. After the credits, there’s now a short playable sequence in which you find and overcome the game’s villain in a way that both makes sense and feels poetic.

[Note: The embedded video below doesn’t spoil anything. It just shows the end of the credits transitioning into a playable section that wasn’t there before.]

Argonus and the Gods of Stone‘s new ending doesn’t just provide a fulfilling ending to your journey. It also gives you a choice between two fates for playable character Argonus, each with a little extra elaboration afterward. All of this is voice acted and everything. Noticeable effort was put into this.

That’s not all, either. One of the other complaints I had about Argonus and the Gods of Stone was the endgame requirement of finding and freeing all of the petrified Argonauts, but this has been relaxed. Not having to find every single one might not sound huge, but aimlessly wandering around the game’s areas for hours was very possible in the original release, and only having to find most of them does a huge service to the pacing at the very end of the game. The newest update also allows you to customize the visuals to eke out more performance, and having more options is always a plus.

Honestly, when I heard about this new “Director’s Cut” patch including a new ending, I expected something tacked-on and only slightly less unfulfilling than the original. This new ending is interesting, though—I immediately went online and looked up an obscure mythology question because of it—and it ties everything together with a nice little bow. If the negative reception to Argonus and the Gods of Stone‘s ending has kept you from picking it up, there’s no longer any reason to hold off, and Zojoi deserves a great deal of respect for finding a way to make this work.
