Encased‘s early access hotfixes have already fixed its aim bug

The post Encased‘s early access hotfixes have already fixed its aim bug first appeared on Killa Penguin.

One of the rare criticisms I lobbed at the Fallout-inspired early access game Encased was your inability to aim at enemies standing on tiles where you’ve already defeated other enemies. It might sound like a minor thing, but this ended up undermining your ability to use tactics such as forcing melee opponents to engage you one at a time by funneling them through doorways, invariably resulting in taking unnecessary damage from multiple sides as you continually moved out into open space to lure them onto unoccupied tiles. Encased has already seen three different hotfix patches, though, and one of these fixed the aim bug. This not only opens the door for more creative strategies against enemies who don’t have ranged weapons but also speeds up combat since melee enemies immediately forfeit their turn if there’s no path to your character.

Encased‘s aim bug fix doesn’t make you invincible against large groups of melee-only enemies. I managed to take down something like a dozen of them in the above video, but some unlucky critical hits toward the end were still enough to finish off my character (the appropriately named “Dead Meat”). Likewise, this kind of strategy won’t help much against enemies with ranged weapons, but I’m not happy to see this strategy suddenly become viable because it’s powerful or abusable. Fallout and the games inspired by it have always been defined by their options—most situations can be solved through either violence, sneakiness, or dialogue, with each approach often having multiple approaches to accommodate character builds. The possibility of engaging Encased‘s melee enemies one at a time is just an additional option to keep in your back pocket.

The latest hotfix also fixes a memory leak when changing locations—which I suspect is behind at least some of the crashing I experienced—and warns the player if they’re about to commit to a bad deal when bartering. Other changes are similarly small in the grand scheme of things, but add up to an even better gameplay experience. Encased‘s final release is going to be quite the game, and it can’t be finished fast enough.
