How One Finger Death Punch 2‘s survival modes work

Things have been surprisingly busy lately, and over the past few days, that’s translated into only having small windows of time to work through various games. One Finger Death Punch 2 fits nicely into such windows, with its campaign levels taking something like 1-3 minutes and its survival modes averaging around 20 minutes (though they’re endless, which means the time investment varies based on your level of skill). After finishing all of the campaign stuff, I found myself wondering what else there was to do. Luckily, there’s a omnipresent ticker at the bottom of the screen that exists to showcase the scores other players have attained in One Finger Death Punch 2‘s various survival modes, so I decided to try my hand at them. My first few scores weren’t anything to write home about, which was deflating considering that I’d 5-starred all of the levels by that point, but this is actually the way survival mode is designed—basically, you’re not going to get any kind of high score until you’ve spent a decent amount of time unlocking the highest available tier (tier 10) as a survival mode starting point because of the way speedups and multipliers are set up.

I wasn’t recording when I started from the early tiers, but I wish I had been—one attempt took something like an hour and had well over 4,000 kills by the time the blisteringly fast pace caught up to me. Still, that score barely made a dent in the leaderboards. There’s a reason why each subsequent video on this page has a point where it beats the previous video’s score, and it has a lot to do with the speed of enemies. You unlock new tiers by defeating a certain number of enemies on your current tier, and this allows you to start survival mode from that higher tier, at which point everyone’s speed is reset; mobs of enemies sometimes have a glowing enemy who causes everyone’s speed to increase when defeated, and that means that tier 8 is significantly faster if you got there from tier 6 than it is if you begin from tier 8 because you’ve caused fewer speedups.

There are 10 tiers, with each providing a significantly more generous score multiplier. The video above ends with 2,353 enemy kills for an end score of a little over 3 million, whereas my 4,000-kill run scored maybe 450,000 or so. The result of this is that there’s no point to score-chasing before you’ve reached tier 10, with the goal of each tier instead being to reach the next rung in order to take advantage of its higher multiplier.

The multiplier increase from tier to tier is substantial, too. Despite having something like a hundred fewer kills in the video above, I managed to score 5.1 million points, which would have required almost doubling my kill count on tier 9 to achieve while dealing with enemies sped up to incoherent speeds. I suppose the overarching point here is to not get discouraged if you’re having trouble obtaining the same kinds of scores as other players in One Finger Death Punch 2‘s survival modes, because they’re likely starting from the highest tier and with (nearly) maxed out skills.
