"Whoa, easy Fido!" Whether you're new to the series or an old dog veteran, fan favourite DMC3: Special Edition has just had some rocking news with Capcom's latest announcement for their upcoming Switch version.
In a developer message earlier this month, producer Matt Walker from the Capcom development team revealed that a couple features would be added for Devil May Cry™ 3 Special Edition on the Nintendo Switch™ system. The first new feature for the upcoming version of the fan-favourite stylish action game, has been confirmed via part one of a special video message series. Fans of the title’s trademark intense, non-stop action will have the ability to seamlessly switch combat styles on the fly when the game launches for Nintendo Switch on February 20. The game is now available for pre-purchase, and information on the remaining additions will be available on January 30 and February 13.
The newly confirmed seamless style switch option allows players to choose between the six combat styles in the game, four of which are available to start and two more which are unlocked as players progress. This new gameplay feature will offer more fluid combat options and create opportunities for exciting new SSStylish combos. A sneak peek at the new gameplay feature will be shown in an accompanying livestream later today on the Devil May Cry social media channels.

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition brings the full stylish action package to Nintendo Switch, offering the addition of Vergil as a playable character and the 9,999 floors of the “Bloody Palace” survival mode. The system’s handheld mode offers the added flexibility of playing on-the-go for the first time.
Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition is now available for pre-purchase from Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch with a special promotion for early bird customers. European players who own or purchase Devil May Cry and/or Devil May Cry 2 for Nintendo Switch will get a discount on their pre-purchase of Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition. In addition, discounts towards Devil May Cry and/or Devil May Cry 2 also apply for those players who own or purchase any other Nintendo Switch title of the series from the European Nintendo eShop. About Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition for Switch:
Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition serves as a prequel for the iconic action series, unfolding years before the original Devil May Cry. This origin story explores the journey leading up to and culminating in Dante’s face-off against his twin brother, Vergil. Dante must use his trademark sword Rebellion and dual pistols Ebony and Ivory to stop Vergil from unlocking a gate to the demonic realm and infesting the world with demons. Along the way, players will gain insight into many aspects of the series, from the first encounter with fan-favorite Lady, as well as the beginnings of Dante’s titular shop.
Ultimately, this is a killer move on Capcoms behalf, because DMC3 is one of the greatest titles to ever release and adding this feature only adds to the fun in this brilliant, crazy, ultra stylish and over the top action game.
Style switching was first introduced in DMC4 and while I wasn't very good at it, it later became streamlined in the more recent release - Devil May Cry 5. In 5 the style switching is a lot more user-friendly and though it takes a little practice to get the hang of things, the learning curve is pretty fair. There's always the possibility that this will make the fairly difficult DMC3 considerably easier, but in order to take full advantage of this new feature, it'll take some skill to get good, so I think it'll balance out the difficulty overall. Still, I only see this as a plus, as Style Switching in 3 is an absolute game changer.

DMC is one of my favourite gaming series of all time, and once I start playing I often find it hard to stop, and yet I always felt a little limited being locked to one style at a time in DMC3's previous releases. Sure, a single style worked okay, but when you could only change styles at Divinity Statues (Statues of Time to those DMC1 fans out there) and the mission select screen, you were stuck playing a certain way for some time. Due to this, you'd always end up leaning toward one style and usually this was the first style you chose. I mean having already accumulated some experience for it, why stop now?
I still remember the hype I felt for DMC3 back during its original 2004 trailer and when I learned more about the game, I was adamant I'd get great at using Royal Guard, and yet this never happened. When I finally got to try it out, I found it to be pretty underwhelming and not leveling it up fully, I didn't realise until years later that its final abilities added some really impressive moves to the Beowulf Devil Arm (Devil Arms are the weapons you obtain from the Demon bosses you kill).
Favouring swift movement, I always defaulted to Trickster, very rarely changing for some Swordmaster play here and there. Now I won't have to worry about this, as styles can be changed on the fly. I almost feel sorry for the many Demons you'll wreck along the way, but when you're able to ride a Demon like it's your very own personal Skateboard, throwing Style Switching into the mix is only going to ramp up the fun and give way for some truly insane gameplay moments. I can't wait.
