Mega Man Soccer

Reviewed on SNES.

When you think of sports-themed games right now, you generally think of the Mario games. Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Strikers, and so much more. Nintendo stuck to what they wanted to do and they carved out their own sports niche with the Mario franchise. Capcom could've done the same with Mega Man, and any other franchise, but after the poor results of Mega Man Soccer, you can see why they opted to shy away from it.

If you think about it, it makes total sense. Especially how the game is designed, the foundation is there, it would have worked, but they simply gave up and didn't want to attempt it again, leaving Nintendo to swoop in and take it by storm. I'm no Fifa player, but if I were to pick up a soccer game to play, it would be Super Mario Strikers on the GameCube. Everything about that game was done right, albeit a small roster of characters, but they did what a themed soccer game should be. This isn't about Super Mario Strikers, so let's go back to Mega Man Soccer.

I wanted to play more but this game frustrated me to no end. It's unfortunate. How could it frustrate me or anyone who plays this game?

The game is very simple. It's soccer. Nothing fancy about that. You can play Exhibition, Tournament, League or Capcom Cup which is the mode to play. It's Mega Man themed, and when you play the game, you're at the traditional Mega Man select screen, choosing your opponents and play away. You must defeat the enemy in a game of soccer and then you "gain" their ability by having that character in your team. Characters appear from Mega Man 1-4 such as Cut Man, Wood Man, Top Man, and many more. You can choose your strategy as to the player count and lineup, and you keep defeating each one until you get to Dr Wily. Simple Mega Man gameplay. Each character has a unique special move, so it's a matter of preference if you stick to a certain character when passing around, or just play and proceed.

All of what I said above, sounds fantastic. If you think Super Mario Strikers, it makes a whole lot of sense in the Mega Man universe. It only sounds fantastic in theory, because the biggest issue in this game is the controls. It's awful, and you're struggling with the controls more than anything in this game. That's the real difficulty here. Any game with poor controls, do you really want to continue playing it? Probably not. That's where this is dropped and forgotten. People don't want to play a game with bad controls, even nostalgic games. There are classic games that are really good that you go back to playing, and there are classic games that are so bad that you go back to playing, but Mega Man soccer doesn't give you that so bad it's good mentality. It's bad you just turn it off and move on.

With the lineup of Mega Man characters right now and so many villains, they could bring this back since Nintendo did it so well with the Mario characters. Is there a demand for this though? Who knows, but I know if there is a very good Mega Man themed sports game to combat Mario games, I'd give it a try.
