Discovering enjoyable games is great, but finding games that you feel you definitely wish you had played sooner is even better. I guess it heightens the excitement as you play. Beyond Two Souls is one of those games. A couple other games this has happened to me are the superb Life is Strange and Spec Ops: The Line. There are more but that’s just two off the top of my head.
Now then, I know not everyone is into games that are a bit different. For example, No Man’s Sky and The Order: 1886 are just two marmite games, you either love them or hate them. I guess Beyond Two Souls falls into this category.
If you are looking for an all action adventure such as Uncharted, or Tomb Raider then this isn’t that type of game. This is a much slower pace of a game. Some people argue that it’s more of an interactive movie. I agree partly because you are still controlling the character for most of the time.
What’s Beyond Two Souls All About?
You play as Jodie a girl raised and tested on at a military medical facility from a young age. As you play through the game you discover she has an ability to see and control an entity that is kind of spiritually attached to her. This controlling of the entity is part of the way you play the game to progress. It’s a clever way to make the storytelling more engaging.
When I started to play the game I could see where the hit show Stranger Things may have got some of its ideas from, although I’m guessing it’s more a coincidence. Its small things like in the beginning scene it includes a young girl in the sheriff’s office with a shaved head with an ability.
I’m not going to say any more about the story as I don’t want to spoil anything for you.
Breaking Down Beyond Two Souls
Beyond Two Souls is a chapter based game and that allows you to play through them in order, or you can play it the way it was meant to be played, out of order. I enjoyed plaything through in this way as it kept me guessing and questioning why things were happening, only later for another chapter to fill in the gaps.
There are 24 chapters in Beyond Two Souls or 25 if you include the epilogue. They vary in length most usually come to an exciting end before moving on the next.
For me there are some standout moments such as in the chapter called Hunted, the police are closing in on Jodie after an exciting chase through a train, on the roof of a train and through the woods and on a motorcycle to a small town.

Eventually, Jodie is trapped in the entrance of a theatre and you must use your entity companion,

A Graphical Treat
The character models and acting in this supernatural thriller is just great, exactly what you have come to expect from a Quantic Dream game/experience. William Defoe and Ellen Page along with the rest of the cast do a great job of portraying different life situations.
Graphical the game was already beautiful on PlayStation 3, and look just as good on PS4. Again, this has become another trademark for Quantic Dream games. Lighting and just the attention to detail really
Final Thoughts
The game lasts quite a while, around 12 hours to complete the main story which is a nice chunky bit of gaming to sink your teeth into with the ability to play through multiple times to see different outcomes to different scenarios in each chapter. The completionist in you could take over 27
Overall, if you want something a bit different to play then I would recommend Beyond Two Souls. I had looked at this game and Heavy Rain many times in the shops and online but never brought myself to make the purchase.
If you didn’t download this while it was included in PS+ then I suggest you pick it up. You can probably get it quite cheap on the PS3 these days. That is unless you don’t have a PS3 in which case you will have to make do with the PS4 version.
