In this article, we’ll discuss how to tame a cat in Minecraft, among other details relating to the cat. Read through to the end to learn more.

What is the fastest way to tame a cat in Minecraft?

Follow these steps to tame a cat quickly in Minecraft:

Step 1: Get raw salmon or raw cod

Raw fish is all you need to tame a cat in Minecraft creative mode. You can find the raw salmon or cod in any nearby lake or river. So, craft a fishing rod and go fishing.

But, how many fish does it take to tame a cat in Minecraft? Well, you should get several (a minimum of 20) because one won’t be enough. You’ll need even more fish if you plan to tame more cats or breed them.

Step 2: Find where the cats live

A cat spawns in villages with a minimum of one villager and four beds. The java edition allows a maximum of 10 cats (40 or more owned beds) while the bedrock edition of the game allows a maximum of 5 cats (4 or more valid beds).

So, you’re likely to find stray cats of different colors in an average village, considering the cats spawn with random looks.

The black cats only spawn when there’s a full moon, or inside swamp huts with witches during world generation.

NOTE: Cats that spawn during the world/village generation don’t despawn. However, those that spawn later can despawn.

Step 3: Feed the fish to the cat

This is the most challenging part of the process because stray cats run away from any approaching players. So, your approach must be extremely slow.

Put the fish in your hotbar, select it, then move towards the cat. Ideally, you can approach it from the front then when you’re close, crouch and remain still while holding out the raw cod or salmon.

When the cat approaches feed the fish. At first, you’ll see gray smoke appearing above the cat. Continue feeding it more fish. Red hearts will appear around the cat.

This means that it’s being tamed. You should feed it some more fish until the hearts disappear, and a collar appears on the cat’s neck.

Congratulations! The cat is tamed and you’re its owner.

What can you do with a cat in Minecraft?

Once tamed, the cat follows you around, purrs often, and doesn’t despawn. It’s capable of teleporting to your location if you move 12 blocks away unless:

  • You order it to sit.
  • It’s in a boat or Minecart.
  • You’re in another dimension.
  • It’s in an unloaded chunk.
  • It’s trying to sit on a bed, furnace, or chest.
  • It’s attached to a fence post using a lead.
  • You’re in the water.

As pets, cats keep players company while exploring the Minecraft world or relaxing at home. Also, the cat scares away phantoms and creepers. The two won’t come within a six-block radius of a cat. This is beneficial because creepers are strong enough to kill a player in Minecraft.

Minecraft gifts from cats

The tamed cats give their owners gifts. These range from:

  • Rabbit hide
  • Rabbit foot
  • Raw chicken
  • String
  • Feather
  • Phantom membrane
  • Rotten flesh

This happens when a player goes to sleep at night and the cat moves and sleeps near them. In the morning when they both wake up, the cat has a 70% chance of dropping any of the gifts listed above.

If the player sleeps during the day or the cat was ordered to sit before the player went to sleep, then no gift will be dropped.

Breeding cats in Minecraft

If you want tamed cats to breed you must feed them raw salmon or cod. They will enter love mode and breed a kitten immediately. After 5 minutes you can feed them the raw fish and they’ll breed again.

The kitten takes the appearance of one of the parents and belongs to the owner of one of the parents. The only difference between the kittens and adult cats is that the adults move faster.

You can accelerate the growth of kittens by feeding them raw cod or salmon.

NOTE: For the cats to breed, one or both must be mobile. In a situation where only one cat is mobile during breeding, the mobile cat’s owner becomes the owner of the kitten.

Other cat behaviours in Minecraft

  • Cats are immune to fall damage.
  • When you feed your injured tamed cat raw salmon or cod, its health gets restored by 2.
  • Cats can see you even with the invisibility status effect.
  • Cats attack rabbits and baby turtles.

How to untame a cat in Minecraft

At the moment, there is no way to untame a cat in Minecraft—unless you kill it.

Now that you know how to find a cat and tame it, you should get yourself one of the best pets in the Minecraft universe. It’ll keep you company, and safe from dangerous mobs. Not forgetting the morning gifts. The game will be much better when you have a cat around.
