House of The Dragon Season 2 Filming Date Revealed

Surprise, surprise! The Filming start date of the House of The Dragon Season 2 has just been revealed — and it’s sooner than you think!

The Film & Television Industry Alliance’s Production List has finally revealed three important updates about House of The Dragon Season 2: the filming start date, filming location and returning directors.

After winning the Best Drama Series at Golden Globes just a month ago, the House of The Dragon is already set to begin filming its second season by March 6, 2023. The second season’s production list showed that most of the shoots will take place in the United Kingdom and Spain.

As expected, Ryan Condal is the season 2 showrunner and will be joined by returning directors, including veterans Alan Taylor and Clare Kilner. According to Midgard Times, House of the Dragon Season 2 will film in Cáceres, Spain, on April 17, 2023, and will continue in England, UK, at the Warner Bros Studios in May 2023. If everything pans out well, the filming will likely wrap up in December 2023.

(Spoiler alert: skip if you haven’t watched House of The Dragons Season 1)

Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel, A Song of Ice and Fire, the House of the Dragon is a prequel to HBO’s Game of Thrones. The storyline of the series is set 200 years back and follows the downfall of the House Targaryen and the events leading to the Dance of The Dragons. The House of the Dragon season 1 finale ended in a civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragon, with the best noble houses and armies in Westeros allying themselves between The Greens, led by King Aegon II, and The Blacks, led by Queen Rhaenyra. The House of The Dragons Season 2 will most likely begin with the aftermath of Prince Lucerys’ death.

Since the premiere of the show last August 2022, the House of the Dragon holds the record as the most-watched series premiere after garnering 10 million viewers in both HBO Max and cable channel and, at the same time, breaking the record for the highest finale viewership since the series finale of Game of Thrones.

Now that fans know when the House of The Dragon Season 2 will begin filming, there are continued speculations as to when the show will finally be on air. But for now, there is one thing that we are certain of: the House of The Dragon Season 2 will not be released this year.

In an interview by Vulture, HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys made it clear that the second season will be ready “sometime in ’24”. Bloys also added that many variables can affect the progress of the show’s production.

There are so many unknowns. It’s not to be coy or secretive, but you don’t want to say it’s going to get ready on this date, and then you have to move it.”, he said in an attempt to manage the viewers’ expectations.

All in all, the filming start date of March 2023 indicates that the House of The Dragon Season 2 is on track to be released in 2024. If this season’s filming follows the same timeline as season 1’s production schedule (which took 14 months until premiere), we can estimate that winter is coming in the summer of 2024!
