5 Warcraft III Custom Games We Want To See In Dota 2

I’ve gotta admit – I’m horrible at Warcraft III. I’m referring of course, to the solo ladder where you pick a race and fight against other players, RTS style. As such, when I discovered Warcraft III custom games, I found myself in heaven. The Custom Games section was where Dota, or Defence of the Ancients Allstars, first came about.

Back then, you would play Dota to destress. Then, when Dota rose in popularity, you started playing other custom games to destress from the Dota stress.

When Valve released Dota 2, a majority of the player base moved from the Warcraft III client to the shiny new toy – me included. The other custom games were left on the shelf, like a forgotten toy once loved but now forever forgotten.

However, when Dota 2 opened a place for players to create and play custom games, many players went crazy. Old flames were rekindled, new relationships forged.

Today, many of the popular custom games such as X-Hero Siege, Pudge Wars and Vampirism are online and loved by the Dota 2 community. But many still remain either in the testing phase or unnoticed by the community. Here are our picks for the games we want to see in Dota 2:

Darwin’s Island 3.0

The map of Darwin’s Island featuring the different starting locations

The gameplay is simple – you start off as a small critter and eat smaller critters to level up – all on an island with 11 other players. All of you compete to eat small NPC animals, and when you get strong enough, eat the other players. As you eat, you level up and evolve into a stronger character, gaining better skills. The goal is to reach level 11 before everyone else and when one person does that, the end-game is triggered. The player that reaches level 11 then gets insane bonuses, and becomes the big boss.

Then it gets interesting.

The game becomes a 1 v 10 scenario where everyone else fights the one big player. Everyone else wins if they manage to kill the big boss. With a wide variety of end-game content, each round is a refreshing experience, lasting not more than 15 minutes. Your custom game breaks are therefore made short and rewarding.

Run Kitty Run

You face hungry wolves that will kill you just through touch in Run Kitty Run

This game tests your ability to react fast, and click faster. You play a Kitty in a maze where you must reach the end point. The only thing in between you and that are wolves that kill you on touch.

Your character has access to a few skills that allow her to dodge, such as Wind Walk and Leap. Of course, knowing when to use them is important. Players can work together and help each other reach the end-goal. There are some versions of this map which plays Linkin Park’s Numb as you play the game, which adds for a rather interesting gaming experience.

A video featuring Run Kitty Run was released three years ago but it appears that it might have been a beta test. Fingers crossed that one day it will be released for to the public.

Pokemon World 9.1

Raikou fighting other smaller Pokemon to get stronger

You wanna play Pokemon? But wanna play Warcraft  at the same time? Pokemon World is the answer for you. Easily one of the biggest maps amongst custom games, Pokemon World offers an almost open-world gameplay where players start off at different regions. You get to roam around catching different Pokemon, and at the end of the 30 minute timer, all players will pit their caught Pokemon in an arena for battle.

It’s a race against time and other players to catch the stronger Pokemon, and veteran players will know secret areas and tricks to catch the legendary ones. This game is a rather fun change compared to Dota or the Standard Ladder games, giving you a chance to catch Pokemon in Warcraft.

Anime Arena

Choose from a selection of Anime characters

A favourite amongst anime lovers, Anime Arena presents a simple but fun gameplay. Players pick their favourite from a pool of anime characters, featuring crowd favourites such as Naruto, Ichigo, and Edward Elric. Characters then battle each other in a rather small map, testing the players’ ability to muster the skills of each hero. With gameplay similar to Angel Arena, players would not require much to learn the game.

Uther Party Ultima

Players get to choose mini-games based on the corresponding Warcraft III sprites

The most relaxing game of relaxing custom games has to be Uther Party. Essentially, it is a game of many mini-games. Players take turns to pick a mini-game and the ultimate winner gets to choose the last few remaining mini-games. Games can vary from Dodge the Rocket, or Horseracing, and are light-hearted and without any stakes. It would definitely be a useful addition to the Dota 2 client as MMR stress can get to people. We could all do with a game that takes the stress away from gaming with some stake-less minigames.
