Pokemon Go Guide: 5 steps to properly control your Eevees’ evolution [confirmed]

With Pokemon Go having been out for almost a month, most users have found a few Easter eggs within the game. One of these include controlling your Eevee’s evolution and was legitimately confirmed by Niantic’s CEO at San Diego Comic-Con! But how do you properly ensure you’ll get the Eeveelutions of your choice? And why are there reports of this method not working? We dug deeper to help you get the Eevee you want!

Following the original Pokemon series’ episode The Battling Eevee Brothers, Ash Ketchum meets three brothers who each had different evolved Eevees. The brothers’ names were Rainer (who had a Vaporeon), Sparky (a Jolteon), and Pyro (a Flareon). Similarly, if you rename your Eevee in Pokemon Go to any one of these three names, you’ll get the corresponding Eevee of your choice. Don’t quite like settling on the name? No worries, you can rename your new evolved Eevee whatever you want afterwards!

Quite a few comments online have revealed that this trick didn’t work for them, but as confirmed by Niantic, it should.

Here’s the steps to make sure this hack works:

  1. Don’t do the name change just before evolving.
  2. Restart the app after you’ve named your Eevee either Rainer, Sparky, or Pyro.
  3. Ensure the Niantic servers have enough time to recognize and save your name change (step 1 and 2 helps with this).
  4. You can not do the same evolution twice in a row (i.e. you evolve an Eevee called Rainer, and then you try evolving another Eevee called Rainer.). You must alternate (e.g. Vaporeon, then Flareon, then Vaporeon again).
  5. Only have one Eevee named as a particular brother’s name. If you have two Pyros in your team of Pokemon, the second Eevee will randomly evolve. So remember to change your evolved Eevee’s name before trying to evolve another Eevee of the same kind!
