12 Great Horror Indie Games!

Halloween is just around the corner, and if you’re like us, you’re probably searching for some good indie Horror games.Indies are usually the ones who aren’t afraid to get into the darker, and less mainstream— a perfect recipe for Halloween. We asked around for some suggestions, and here’s what we came back with!

Archimedes

Price: USD $2.99

The premise of the game begins with you installing an old operating system called Archimedes. After the installation, a strange man asks for help through the computer and you begin to uncover terrible secrets. Another interesting part of the game is that some puzzles require the use of external applications such as when solving real-world geographical puzzles.

Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion

Price: Free

This game deceives you with its harmless beginnings, but as you start progressing through the numerous rooms, the horror starts to ramp up. Trust us, it gets pretty scary. A perfect “trick” if you’ve got a friend up for the challenge!

The House Abandon

Price: Free

A horror-themed text adventure with an environment that reacts. Inspired by the wonders of text adventures on the ZX Spectrum, the Legendary Amstrad CPC, and Commodore 64, “The House Abandon” is a modern re-imagining of the text adventure.

Quadrant

PriceUSD $4.99

You play as a member of a hazmat cleanup division, accidentally sent to Aether Research Facility. As you start to discover more about the research and get close to uncovering the truth about the facility, things start to get darker and darker.

Don’t Starve Together

Price: USD $14.99 (but includes an extra copy for a friend!)

One of my favorite multiplayer games — and they recently came out with a Halloween update! Not exactly your traditional horror game, but sprinting back to the campfire in the dark while things attack you, and not to mention slowly becoming insane and seeing shadowy figures is, well, pretty horrifying.

Angel in the Dark

Price: Free

An audio and text based adventure where you wake up in a dark cave and you can’t see anything. The dev suggests you play the game in the dark with some good old headphones — which is the only way you should play horror games. With no visual cues, the game really lets your imagination get the best of you.

Syndrome

Price: USD $24.99

You wake up from cryosleep, only to find that your crew is dead. What killed them is probably still inside the ship. You’ll need to find out what happened and do whatever it takes to survive.

Lurking

Price: Free

Lurking is a sound-based survival thriller. Sound is the only way for you to see, and unfortunately, they can hear your fears. The world is visualized through audio pulses. Everything that makes sounds also creates a pulse around it, whether it’s the sound of you walking or throwing an object. Plus, you can hook up a microphone to convert whatever sounds you make into in-game audio pulses.

Graveyard Shift

PriceUSD $2.99

You are a graveyard keeper tasked with stopping the undead! The only way to get rid of them is to shoot a combination of magical mushrooms. This is an FPS that uses a Magicka-like spell system. You can make different magical shots with different combinations of mushrooms that you pick up. This is a child-friendly game.

Eversion

Price: USD $4.99

A cute puzzle-platformer in case you just want to take a break from horror games. You are Zee Tee, and you’re tasked with rescuing the princess from the Ghulibas of the north! (Just kidding, it gets pretty dark.)

Enola

Price: USD $14.99

An interesting psychological horror adventure game, where you, as Enola, must survive through a world conjured up by tortured memories of her lover, Angelica.

The Count Lucanor

Price: USD $9.99

A puzzle adventure that surrounds you in a world reminiscent of Grimm fairy tales. You play as Hans, tasked to unravel the secrets of the castle and the mysterious kobold that you meet.

Of course there are still plenty of other great Horror Indie Games out there. Let us know your favorite in the comments and have a Happy Halloween!
