Goat Milk Soap 101: The Ultimate Guide for Making OR Buying It

Watch commercials today and you’ll be flooded with images of skin care and beauty items that promise perfection. However, a closer look reveals a sinister truth about many of these products- they are filled with toxic ingredients.

Commercially produced soaps are filled with synthetic additives that keep you clean from dirt but dry up your skin in the process. Not only are they less nourishing for your body, they can lead to flaking and bad reactions to artificial fragrances.

If you’re looking for a natural alternative that nourishes your skin as it cleans it, Goat Milk Soap is the cleaning product for you.

What is Goat Milk Soap?

Put simply, Goat Milk soap is a nourishing, all-natural soap that uses goat’s milk as the main ingredient. Used in skin care regimes for centuries, goat milk has a plentiful supply of natural vitamins and minerals, and a shorter protein strand means its benefits are easily absorbed by your body. This helps your skin look radiant and healthy, instead of stripped of its moisture content like most soaps make it look. For those looking to live a more natural lifestyle that depends on non-synthetic products for skin care, goat milk soap is a perfect alternative to other products.

8 Benefits of Goat Milk Soap

The advantages for using goat milk soap on your skin are numerous. Below are nine of the biggest benefits that regular use of goat milk soap will provide for you.

1. Full of Essential Vitamins

Goat milk soap is a great way to nourish your skin with the essential vitamins it needs. Rich in Vitamin A to help repair damaged skin tissue, this luxurious soap also contains plenty of vitamins D, B1, B6, B12, C, and E. Medical studies have shown that using beauty products with plenty of vitamin A can reduce lines and wrinkles, reduce the visibility of psoriasis and even control acne. Most soaps are water based and don’t contain many natural vitamins, but goat milk soap is naturally rich with them.

2. Delayed Skin Aging

Because of its impressive levels of vitamin A and alpha-hydroxy acids, goat milk soap is designed to break down dead skin bonds in order to allow the cells to wash away, leaving room for new cells to generate. This makes skin appear smoother, younger, and more wrinkle free.

3. Anti-Inflammatory

Because of its high fat content, goat milk soap helps to lessen inflammation. The cream in goat milk is a natural moisturizer with anti-inflammatory cytokines that help cells produce a stronger immune response when threatened.

4. Good for Treating Acne

Because goat milk soap is naturally antibacterial, it is highly useful for slowing down and preventing the growth of acne in your skin. When you exfoliate your skin with goat milk soap, you remove dead skin cells that cause your skin pores to clog and produce acne.

5. Reduces Symptoms of Dry, Itchy Skin

Due to its naturally hydrating properties, goat milk soap is ideal for treating the symptoms of dry, cracked skin that are so common with eczema and psoriasis. The fat molecules in the soap boosts its moisturizing abilities, leaving you with smooth, soft skin instead.

6. No Harsh Chemicals

Regular soap is usually full of harsh chemicals that cause more harm than help to your skin, but the natural vitamins, minerals and acids in goat milk soap hydrate your skin without causing chemical burns that only work to age your skin.

7. Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Also known as lactic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids naturally remove dead skin cells from your skin’s surface, leaving new cells on the surface of your skin instead. Working by breaking down the bonds between different skin cells, alpha-hydroxy acids are naturally found in goat milk soap and work to improve the appearance of your skin without irritation. While this beneficial acid is added to many body creams, sunscreens and acne products on the market today, it tends to work best in natural products like goat milk soap.

8. Minerals

Rich in minerals that are essential for skin health, goat milk soap contains impressive amounts of selenium, a compound that’s believed to help prevent skin cancer. Though water based soaps often contain minerals too, the levels found in goat milk soap are significantly higher.

How to Make Goat Milk Soap

Contrary to what you might think, soap is incredibly simple to make right at home. With just a little time and prep work you can make your own goat milk soap that’s filled with the ingredients that nourish your skin best. If you’re new to making your own soap, this moisturizing recipe is a great place to start.

Ingredients:

  • 13 ounces goat milk
  • 15 ounces olive oil
  • 12 ounces coconut oil
  • 13 ounces other oil, including lard, palm oil, vegetable shortening or others
  • 6 ounces lye (also known as 100% sodium hydroxide)
  • 1 ounce essential oil (optional)
  • Extra additives for color and texture like oatmeal, lavender flowers, etc.

Directions

  1. Freeze your goat milk the day before you plan to make soap. Getting it cold isn’t good enough- it truly needs to be frozen. Pre-measured Ziploc bags tend to work well.
  2. Choose a medium-sized glass or metal bowl and place it inside a larger one. Fill the outside bowl halfway with ice water, and place the frozen chunks of milk in the inner bowl.
  3. Slowly add the lye and squish it into the milk with a spoon or potato masher. The lye will likely make the milk feel hot, so replace the ice if it starts to melt. Watch the color of the milk, it’s fine if it turns tan or light brown, but dark brown means the milk is scorched and you need to start over.
  4. Once the milk is fully mixed, keep it on ice while combining the oils together on the stove and heating them to 110-125 degrees F.
  5. Once they reach the ideal temperature, slowly pour the lye back into the oils, mixing by hand for at least five minutes. The mixture will soon become thick, at which point you can add essential oils and other additives before pouring the mix into soap molds.
  6. After 24 hours, remove the soap from the molds and cut it into the desired shape. Let the soap ‘cure’ for three to four weeks before using it, turning it occasionally to expose new sides to air. Once completely cured, you can wrap up the soap until you’re ready to use it.
