How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

Person Of Interest is a 2011 American science fiction drama television series created by Jonathan Nolan and starring Jim Caviezel, Taraji P. Henson and Kevin Chapman. Former CIA agent Reese (Jim Caviezel) – now presumed dead – and billionaire software genius Finch (Michael Emerson) join forces as a vigilante crime-fighting team. Using Finch’s program, which employs pattern recognition to determine individuals who will soon be involved in violent crimes, they combine Reese’s covert-operations training and Finch’s money and cyberskills to stop crimes before they happen. Former Army Intelligence Support Activity operative Sameen Shaw joins the pair in their quest. This is a review of the score to seasons 3 and 4 by Ramin Djawadi.

This is a show that annoys me personally, not that it’s a bad show (it isn’t). It’s just that everyone loves it and I’ve been trying to get into it a few times but have failed so far. Hopefully I’ll get into it some day. I have no connection with the music although I’ve heard the score to season 1 and 2 which were good so I hope seasons 3 and 4 give me more of the same. The score opens with ‘Analogue Interface’, a dark bleak track fit for a dystopian future or no future at all. Yeah this is really dark material and it continues with ‘Pursuit Of Liberty’ which follows suit. I guess the sometime good humorous mood of the first season got really dark in the later seasons as it should. It certainly appear like that judging by the music. Well those first 3 cues were tough to get through. The 4th, ‘Game Over’ is a lot more uplifting. It’s a nice ostinato theme, mostly electronic, and certainly makes a big difference.

The score doesn’t engage as much as I remember season 1 and 2 did. There are moments like the action cue ‘Finch Takes Fight’ where I feel really excited about what I hear. Then there are cues like ‘The Bridge’ which does nothing for me. It’s constantly going hot and cold on me. It bothers me that I can’t quite connect with it like I have done previously. There’s something about this, the mood has changed, it has evolved for better or worse. For me it has evolved in the wrong direction musically, but only on album. I can’t properly judge it without having seen these two seasons, but I’m quite sure Djawadi has it covered and the reason for this dark music will become clear. What do you think of the score?
