Party At The Devil's House

I managed to get a movie watched yesterday before crashing early. I wasn't feeling all that great yesterday, something gave me a good sinus headache, so as soon as I got the movie done I went to bed. I hit up my DVR to find something to watch and settled on the movie Killer Pad (2008). It wasn't the oldest horror movie I had on the list, but this one was the shortest. Considering how I felt before watching it, I think I made the right choice.

Three friends. Doug (Daniel Franzese), Craig (Eric Jungmann) and Brody (Shane McRae), move to L.A. but are having a bit of trouble finding a place to live. They eventually meet someone who is willing to give them a chance and they get a great deal on a house in Hollywood Hills. When they get there, a Mexican (Héctor Jiménez) is there to warn them off, saying that the Devil has possessed the house. Since he is speaking in Spanish, and none of the guys understand what he is saying, they think he is talking about some hot sauce. After meeting Lucy (Emily Baldoni), the guys decide to throw a big party, but should they be worried that their house has a gateway to Hell?

Killer Pad was given to us by writer Don Stoller and director Robert Englund. Yes, that Robert Englund. I had some trouble getting into this one. The main problem I had with it is that it takes a scary situation and tries to make it feel funny instead. At least they avoid the fart jokes and stuff like that, which is always a good thing for me. Still, horror/comedy works best when the story remains scary, but the characters react or handle the situation in a funny way. Once in a while that type of situation appears in Killer Pad. The way the guys handle finding dead bodies in the hot tub made me laugh a little. Most of the comedy comes from the three friends being totally clueless about...well, everything! At times that was funny, but after a while it got rather boring since you already know pretty much what they will do or say to any given situation they find themselves in. I get that Killer Pad was a spoof, at least in part, but there is no tension to be found and no scares at all. This is Englund's second time behind the camera for a film. I thought that part of the film was fine. One of the characters I kind of enjoyed was the priest who shows up. The three friends actually know him, and make fun of him some. He struggles with some of his own personal demons while trying to save others at times. Some of this was pretty funny to me. You would think with an R rating that there would be some nudity, that and the nature of the story itself. Sadly there is none, and there were some nice looking women at the party, unless you want to count the guy's ass as he sits down to use the toilet.

There wasn't a whole lot for special effects, and what we do get can look a bit cheesy at times. I think this was done on purpose though. There is a cut throat, severed heads and a few of the women turn into demons. Nothing very graphic really and the demon makeup was okay. The acting was pretty good at least. While I didn't really get into there characters, being so completely clueless, Franzese, Jungmann and McRae at least pull it off well. It was also fun seeing people like Jeff Bryan Davis, who played the priest. Sam McMurray plays the Fire Marshall who is looking for an invite to the party more than anything. Lin Shaye has a small role towards the start of the film. And it funny to find Joey Lawrence show up.

I didn't really have a whole lot to say about Killer Pad. I was struggling to figure out what to talk about mid way threw after I talked about what this movie is about. A big part of that is just because this is nothing more than a comedy. I am surprised that Englund didn't pop in as an actor, and I think it would have been pretty cool if he had for a short time. While I didn't really get into Killer Pad, it does has its fans. It is just under an average rating on both Netflix and IMDb. Not a great rating of course, but shows it does have its share of fans. Give this one a look if it sounds interesting to you. I'm in no hurry to watch it again, but if I came across it on a movie channel I would probably leave it on for background noise and to watch here and there. Nothing great but hardly a bad film.
2 out of 5 Glad my parties were nothing like this one
