Ultra Indie: The Last

As Halloween 2016 rapidly approaches, so does your deadline for grabbing some cool swag for Ultra Indie project The Last, a full length indie horror movie in the works from brothers Nathaniel and Matthew Barber. According to the brothers, both graduates from the Colorado Film School and soon-to-be graduates of the University of North Texas, The Last is a creature feature, but one they believe will bring a different type of horror, something likely not done before. What? I don’t know, but I’m intrigued.

Fear with Beer is giving a shout-out to this mysterious project (even though Nathaniel has informed me he is not, I repeat, not *GASP* a beer drinker) because of the consistent effort and energy the two have put out in promoting this largely self-funded project. Additionally, the teasers and promos show a level of professionalism that has drawn me into enthusiastically rooting for this venture.

According to Nathaniel, the story is based around a terminally ill man who encounters something terrifying while stranded in the woods. Two Previous Shorts by the Barber brothers, Windigo Origins (2014) and Windigo Revolution (2015) were both filmed outside in the dark, skillfully using torch and firelight to create mood and tension. The experience in filming those two shorts likely has contributed to the planned staging for The Last, which will also be filmed in the woods.

Both fans of indie inspiration Robert Rodriguez, whose classic feature length film El Mariachi was created on a shoestring budget, the brothers relish the freedom afforded by the indie experience (if not the lack of funds). According to Nathaniel, The Last focuses on a strong script and deeply flawed yet realistic characters rather than defaulting to more traditional (and cliche) characters sometimes found in monster films. Additionally, the film is built around an evolving meaning designed to keep the viewer engaged and caring about the characters.

The filmmaker duo has been running a GoFundMe campaign looking to raise money to help cover basic costs. The campaign is currently scheduled to end soon on November 1, 2016, so grab some great perks on The Last's GoFundMe page. Additionally, you can find a selection of video promos as well as their previous shorts. They are currently working on securing funding from private investors, so this crowdfunding venture may be your last chance to secure cool memorabilia like a signed movie still or an end credit mention.

Production is planned to begin on January of 2017 in Oklahoma. I'm going out on a limb for this one, so call it a hunch: I have a feeling this will turn out to be something really special. For $7 you can feed a "Hungry Monster", their entry-level donation, for $25 get yourself a signed photo, and for 100 an on-screen credit. When the Barbers become the next Rodriguez or Carpenter, it will be satisfying to know that you had been with them from the beginning ... and have proof.
