He is not just an ordinary pirate because he is a yonko (emperor) one of the four who rules the New World together with Big Mom, Kaido, and Blackbeard. 

Shanks is very relaxed and easy going even when he is in trouble. Also, he has good and very critical with his decisions that's why the world government is tolerating his actions. Shanks is the main reason why Luffy wanted to be the king of pirates. Shanks is the owner of the strawhat before Luffy and after Roger.
