When The Wind Blows – Review

Have you seen this?? Do you know what this is??

An elderly couple, James and Hilda Bloggs, are living in Southeast England, going about their daily lives when a Nuclear Strike hits. They are rightfully confused and they do their best as sweet, innocent, old people trying to follow the guide for what to do as they are isolated in their home in the countryside, slowly succumbing to radiation poisoning.

This is not your typical Nuclear bomb storyline. There’s no hero fighting to stop the bomb going off. There’s no community banding together to pool their resources to stay alive. There’s no  race to get out of the affected area.

There’s just this couple in their home. They follow the guides and do what they were told because they were told that doing this would save them. They were told that if they just do this thing in this way then it will all be okay and help will arrive. So they do the thing in that way and wait for help to arrive. But it’s not okay. It’s not okay at all. They were lied to. This poor little old lady and this poor little old man are clinging on to the hope that was fed to them by the government they trusted and it just doesn’t work. God dammit. You can’t do this to sweet, old people. It’s not okay.

But of course they don’t understand the full implications of a nuclear strike because they were never told the full implications of a nuclear strike. So they go on and make the most of what they have. They build a little shelter and they collect up their food. They make some tea and they collect rainwater and they do what they can. But they start to get sick. Then they get sicker. And they’re confused because they did what the books told them to.

The animation is awesome and it Fits Perfectly. The soundtrack is awesome and it fits perfectly. Everything comes together brilliantly to create one heart wrenching story where nothing exciting happens, you just slip further and further into a pit of depression as they slip further and further into radiation poisoning.

I’m so sad and pissed off by this. Go watch the damn film, it’s incredible.
