Spider veins of the leg is a common problem, particularly affecting women. Small, purple or red veins, sometimes called sunburst or starburst vessels because of their appearance, can form anywhere on the leg, from the top of the thigh to the ankle. What causes spider veins?

No one has determined for certain why some people are affected with spider veins and others are not, however some families seem predisposed to the condition. Trauma to the leg in the form of blows or falls may contribute to the formation of these veins, and long periods of standing or sitting may also be causative factors. More women than men seem to develop this condition perhaps as a result of pregnancy or hormones.

Can spider veins be prevented?

Scientists have not discovered any clear-cut methods to prevent the onset of these veins, however some authorities believe that the use of support hose, weight control, and exercise may be beneficial.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which a physician, using a syringe with a tiny needle, injects a small amount of a solution directly into that spider vein. The solution displaces the blood within the vein thus causing it to blanch or turn white. The solution then causes the vessel to become irritated. Following the injection, a pressure bandage is usually applied to the site to prevent post-injection bleeding and to promote healing. Each spider vein may require several injections and most will disappear within two weeks to two months after the treatment.

Is the procedure painful?

Patients, who have had sclerotherapy, have reported little discomfort. Some experience a slight to moderate burning sensation immediately after the injection but this disappears within a few seconds.

Are their any side effects following treatment?

Most patients experience no adverse effects, however some minor side effects have been reported. These include slight blistering, which occurs when small amounts of the solution seep into the surrounding skin areas. These blisters tend to heal rapidly. Occasionally, a small, dark area of pigmentation resembling a freckle may remain. These spots, however, usually resolve in time or respond to treatment with bleaching agents. Bruising and darkening of the skin around the treated area, which eventually disappears, is common. Avoiding sunlight for 2-3 months after treatments minimizes the darkening of the skin.

The basis of the technology is the specific wavelength of the light beam produced by the laser. Through the years of research it has been shown that the substance, depending on its color, will absorb light of a certain wavelength. As the vessel we are trying to eliminate is filled with blood, it will readily absorb light emitted by the laser. Over time, the lining deteriorates and the vessel occludes and shrinks. It is important to remember that these blood vessels are not essential for normal circulation. The beauty of this concept is that the overlying skin is not damaged in the process. As a side effect of the treatment we sometimes see bruising, and hyperpigmentation or darkening of the skin caused by the vessels actually rupturing. When this occurs small amounts of blood are seen under the skin and it is usually resolved within a few weeks to months.

There is often some mild discomfort during the treatment, but little or none after. Treated areas should not be exposed to the sun for several months before and after the laser.
